Roman looked different, and not in a good way. His shirt was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, his tie was nowhere to be found, and his eyes were red and swollen, bags that looked like bruises under them. He stood a distance from us, his hands clenching and unclenching by his sides. “You’re saying we should ignore everything?” “No,” I answered in a whisper. “I’m saying, look at me. See me as you’ve always done.” I pointed a shaking finger at myself. “Have I ever asked for money? No.” They shifted on their feet. “Power? The company? The will? No. I’ve never asked for any of those things, then why… why was it so easy to believe those things now?” I told myself that I wasn't going to cry again, but I knew that was impossible.
