Samuel blinked.
A crowd.
Phones pointed.
Jenna looking like she might pass out.
“Uh… did I miss something?” he asked slowly.
Before Jenna could speak, Aisha jumped in with the speed of a Formula 1 driver “Nothing! Everyone is just… admiring how well you two look together!”
Jenna shot her a murderous look.
Samuel frowned “together?”
Someone in the crowd whispered loudly, “awwww, he’s pretending. These private guys ehn, so shy!”
Another chimed in, “I knew he was Igbo, see how he’s forming calm fiancé!”
Jenna’s soul left her body.
Samuel turned to her “Fiancé?”
Jenna’s brain screamed run, but her mouth said; “Yes.”
Samuel blinked again, “Since when?”
Jenna swallowed, “Since… now?”
A ripple of ‘awwwww’ went through the crowd like a wave of emotional chaos.
Samuel stared at her.
Really stared.
Then, to her shock, he smiled softly.
“So that’s why everyone has been giving me strange looks”, he said, half-amused.
Jenna whispered, “Please don’t shout. I’ll explain.”
He leaned in and whispered back, “You better.”
Before they could escape, someone from the crowd called out, “Kiss!”
Jenna nearly screamed.
Samuel raised his palms, “No kissing. She’s—she’s fasting.”
Jenna gasped silently. Fasting? Really? That’s your excuse?
But it worked because Nigerians respected fasting.
“Awwww, spiritual couple!”
“God-fearing fiancé!”
Within seconds, the crowd dispersed – only to continue gossiping elsewhere.
Samuel crossed his arms “Okay. Start talking.”
Jenna sighed “It was a panic lie. I didn’t plan it. I’m sorry.”
He rubbed his forehead, “So basically… you told the entire office we’re engaged because you were stressed?”
“Yes.” She replied, with her head bowed down.
“And now I’m trending online as your mystery man?”, he asked.
“Also yes”, she replied.
He stared at her for three seconds.
Then he burst into laughter, not a small laugh, a full belly laughed which made him double over.
Jenna pouted, “It’s not funny!”
“Oh, it is”, he said. “But we need to fix it before my mother sees it.”
Jenna groaned.
This was only the beginning.
