Chapter 6 — The First Fiancé Meeting

313 Words
By the next morning, the entire office behaved like they were starring in a Nollywood wedding movie. Someone decorated her desk with “Congratulations” balloons. Someone else left malt and biscuits as a “pre-engagement snack.” By 10am, HR sent her a message: “We need to discuss your upcoming marital leave.” Jenna wanted to roll under her desk and sleep there forever. Samuel, meanwhile, handled everything… too well in fact. He greeted coworkers with a knowing smirk. Referenced “our weekend plans.” Even defended her when Lawrence tried to poke holes in the story. “So, Samuel,” Lawrence said smugly, “when is the wedding?” Samuel didn’t miss a beat. “Oh, we haven’t decided. Something intimate. Unlike your last two relationships.” Aisha almost collapsed laughing. Jenna stared at him. “You didn’t have to destroy him.” Samuel shrugged “he deserved it.” But at lunch, things escalated. Lawrence walked up to them with a suspicious glint. “Since you two are so in love… let’s have lunch together. My treat.” Jenna panicked. Samuel agreed instantly. During lunch, Lawrence interrogated them like a FBI agent. “How did you meet?” Samuel answered. “What is her favorite snack?” Samuel answered. “What is his middle name?” Jenna choked – but Samuel gently tapped her knee under the table. “Adesina,” he whispered. She repeated it out loud. Lawrence squinted. But every time he tried to catch them slipping, Samuel pulled Jenna close, rested his arm behind her chair, or brushed her fingers playfully. Her heart was working overtime. Later, as they walked back, she whispered, “are you trying to get us exposed or make me faint?” Samuel smirked “both?” She shoved him lightly. He laughed. And for a moment… She forgot this was fake.
