There was an eerie silence in the Silver Moon Pack's territory, the moon casting a silvery glow over the dense forest. Karina lay in her bed grateful at the outcome of the events earlier, the question of where she got her healing abilities, still a mystery, her thoughts swirling as sleep eluded her. She tossed and turned, restless with a strange sense of anticipation.
Eventually, exhaustion claimed her, and she fell into a deep sleep. In her dreams, she found herself standing in a misty clearing surrounded by ancient trees, their branches reaching towards the dark night sky painted with the crystal glow of the stars. The air was thick with an otherworldly energy, tinged with a sense of mystery and nostalgia.
"Karina," a familiar soft voice called out from the shadows. A voice she would never forget. Karina's heart skipped a beat as she turned towards the sound. There, emerging from the mist, stood a figure she wouldn’t mistake for somebody else. The figure was cloaked in shimmering light, but Karina already knew who she was.
"M-Mother?" Karina whispered, her voice barely audible for the other person to hear. She took a tentative step forward, her eyes widening in disbelief. It was her mother, Evelyn, but she appeared younger and radiant unlike the weak and terrified mother she grew up with, her eyes filled with warmth and sorrow.
"Karina, my dear," Evelyn said, her voice tinged with sadness. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you."
Tears welled up in Karina's eyes as she rushed forward, embracing her mother tightly, savoring the moment she had. "I thought you were gone," she choked out, her voice breaking with emotions she hid for so long.
Evelyn held her daughter close, her touch comforting and familiar. She gently caressed Karina’s face and pulled it up so that their eyes would meet. "I am gone, Karina. I passed away before I could tell you the truth."
"What truth?" Karina asked, pulling back slightly. She searched her mother’s eyes in confusion.
Evelyn sighed, a mixture of regret and pain clouding her features making it more visible for Karina that it was something important. "You are not just a wolf, my dear. You are half-wolf and half-witch."
Karina's mind reeled at her mother's words. "A witch?" she repeated incredulously. “What.. What do you mean I’m half-wolf and half-witch?”
Evelyn nodded, her expression solemn and understanding. "Yes, my dear. It's in your blood, a legacy passed down through generations. I was a witch, one of the strongest in our kind, and your father, the former Alpha of the Crimson Claw Pack, was a powerful werewolf. You inherited both our gifts."
“Wait.. My father is the former Alpha of the Crimson Claw Pack? Derek’s father? I’m confuse mother..” Karina completely pulled away from her mother’s arms.
“Derek’s my mate. Is that why he rejected me?”
Evelyn shook her head, reaching Karina’s hand and holding it close to her. “The father you grew up with was not your real father. Derek’s father isn’t your father either.” She placed a kiss on Karina’s forehead to remove Karina’s frown. A gesture her mother use to do when she’s confused or afraid. Kissing everything away.
“Derek’s grandfather, your father’s beta, betrayed him. He killed your father and handed us to the man you grew up with. He’s not with us to take care of us, my child. He was with us to prevent us from fighting back.” Karina saw tears welled up her mother’s eyes.
“Derek’s father became the alpha after that. I’m so sorry.. I couldn’t protect you.”
Karina struggled to comprehend the revelation. "But why didn't you tell me before?"
Evelyn's gaze softened with regret. "I wanted to protect you, Karina. I swear I do. The world of witches and wolves is complex and often dangerous. I feared for your safety. The members of the Crimson Claw Pack aren’t the only danger you’d face. My kind would try to kill you too, so I kept it hidden, hoping you could live a normal life."
Karina felt a surge of conflicting emotions. She had always felt different, felt she didn’t belong, a sense of something more within her that she couldn't explain. Now, faced with the truth, she should be mad to her mother for hiding it to her, but she realized that her mother had sacrificed her own peace to shield her from a world she had been destined to be a part of.
"What does this mean for me now?" Karina asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.
Evelyn placed a hand on Karina's shoulder, her touch grounding and reassuring. "It means embracing who you are, Karina. Embracing both your wolf and witch heritage. You have powers within you, waiting to be awakened and right now, you find the right place for you to grow."
The mist around them began to shimmer and swirl, revealing glimpses of ancient symbols and swirling energies. Karina watched in awe as her mother demonstrated spells and rituals, imparting knowledge that had been hidden from her for so long.
"You have a choice now, Karina," Evelyn said gently. "You can continue to deny this part of yourself. You can hide and run away from it just like I did, or you can embrace it and discover the true extent of your abilities."
Karina looked into her mother's eyes, seeing a reflection of her own inner fight and determination. She now finally realizes why she had always felt a connection to nature, a sensitivity to energies that now made sense considering her dual heritage. The pull she felt from nature was from her mother’s heritage.
"I want to learn," Karina said finally, her voice filled with determination. "I want to embrace who I am and honor the legacy you've entrusted to me, mother. I want to make you and father proud."
Evelyn smiled, her eyes shining with pride. "Even before you were born, my child, we’re already proud of you. And we always knew you would make the right choice, my dear. Just trust in yourself, Karina. Trust in your instincts and the guidance of those who care for you and you care about."
As her mother slowly disappearing along with the mist and the dream began to fade, Karina held onto her mother's words, a newfound sense of purpose filling her heart. She knew that her journey was just beginning, that there were challenges and discoveries awaiting her beyond the misty veil of dreams, but she will face and embrace them head on, with pride and determination.
When Karina woke up the next day, the morning sun was already up, bathing the forest in golden light. She lay in her bed inside her cabin, her mind filled with the echoes of the dream she had. It felt like a distant memory, yet she could still feel warmth of her mother's embrace lingering in her body, reminding her of the path she had chosen.
