Chapter 4
“Where is your alpha?” he said.
Seris's knees almost buckled. His presence was too overwhelming, she fought with everything she had to not turn into her wolf form. She wanted to cower and hide, but that would be a disgrace.
She cleared her throat and looked at everything but him. “He has a very urgent issue to handle. I will be your host for today,” she said quickly.
Zayn looked at this little woman in front of him.
‘She was tall,’ he noted. All the women he had seen were not as tall as she was. He looked her over while she looked away. She had on a pretty blue dress, her hands were behind her back, her little movement drew his attention to her….
He took a step back. “Well then. Lead the way,” he said.
Seris noted that he talked like he had all the time in the world. It was as if he wanted to carefully pronounce every single letter in his words.
She nodded and looked behind him. Behind him, more cars stopped and more wolves alighted.
Seris counted that they were more than twenty. All males. She frowned.
That was very unusual. But she didn't think too much about it.
“Your bags—” she began, but Zayn stopped her.
“Leave it,” he said in just two words. He didn't offer any more explanation. He looked ahead of her, and then around. He took a deep breath and different scents flooded into his nose.
He noted cakes and drinks. And then looked down at the little woman.
Yes, little. No matter how tall she was, she still looked little in his eyes.
“ Please follow me,” she said and turned around. Zayn followed after her. He kept a good distance away from her. Seris sighed in relief.
The man was too overwhelming.
They walked in silence into the pack. Zayn took a deep breath and noted a lot of scent. A particular scent made his brows furrow.
A wolf stepped up from behind him.
“Something feels off,” he whispered. Zayn nodded.
When they passed by a room. Zany's brows tightened more. A strange smell wafted from this room. It smelled awful to him.
He sped up unknowingly, shortening the distance between him and Seris. Seris glanced back and saw him closer. She straightened her back subconsciously.
Seris finally got to a room on the last floor. It was the best room in the pack, second to the alpha’s room. Seris had arranged it herself.
She opened the door and ushered him in.
“This would be your room. It has the best view in the pack, very spacious and private.” she introduced briefly. Zayn nodded. He liked his privacy.
Other wolves came in and set his bags down. Seris stood by the door as he looked around. Then he turned to her.
“The picnic?” he raised a brow at her.
It took Seris a few seconds to figure out what he was asking. And when she did, her face reddened.
“It's almost over. I will bring you lunch in an hour. “With that, she hurried away.
When she got into the kitchen, she exhaled heavily. Her chest was beating against her rib cage, threatening to burst out.
“How did he know?”
While Seris took care of Alpha Zayn and his people, tragedy struck the pack marketplace. It was just like any other market, with wolves yelling out what they sold and their prices when suddenly a wolf leaped off the fence.
The people thought it was just a random pack member when they suddenly noticed the strange smell from the wolf. Before they could do anything, it jumped on top of a woman and a bit down on her neck.
The woman and others around her screamed in terror, but the wolf didn't let go. It bit down until his head was separated from her body.
“It's a rogue wolf!” someone yelled.
Everyone fled in panic. The wolf gave chase. The unlucky ones who fell were bitten by the wolf. The market wolves were the lowest level of wolves with no combat power. They were utterly helpless.
Some wolves escaped to call for help. In the midst of the panic, nobody noticed that a young woman had stepped out of the same place the wolf had leaped out of.
She immediately began running after the wolf that stood over a frightened child. The child screamed until his eyes rolled back.
Aveline bravely stepped up and pounced on the wolf. She shouted orders to the people as she fought the wolf bravely. The child was pulled back and everyone stood at a safe distance.
They all watched in awe as she fought and finally killed the wolf. Then they clapped in admiration.
“Oh my gosh. She killed the wolf?”
“Can you believe that?”
“She's awesome and strong.”
“She's definitely better than Luna, who only knows how to make mistakes. I heard Luna fall over and planted her face on a cake and the alpha sent her away,” someone gossiped.
Aveline listened to their gossip with her back to the people and a smirk on her face. Then she turned to the crowd and asked.
“Who is in charge here?”
The surrounding wolves stopped and then someone said in the crowd.
“In a situation like this where the alpha is busy, shouldn't the Luna or one of the alpha’s mates step in?” she asked.
The wolves looked at each other. Then they realized it. Seris was nowhere to be found.
“That's right. She's supposed to be here,” someone added.
“Exactly. What is she doing, sleeping? Sleeping when there's danger.”
Aveline liked where the discussion was heading. “I sent someone to call Seris, but it looked like she was in a bad mood…” Her voice faded at the end. She bit her lips, looking like she didn't want to say anything bad about Seris.
This enraged the crowd.
“Bad mood. Is she acting as if someone pushed her? How dare she?”
“At this point, is she ready to be the Luna?” someone else asked.
“Thank goodness Aveline came just in time.”
“Yes. Or else we would have all been dead while the future Luna sulked in her room.”
Aveline put her lips and watched the enraged people. She did nothing to stop them.
Meanwhile, Julian was still at the picnic. Aveline had suddenly made an excuse to leave for the bathroom, and he was completely bored.
He kept glancing at the spot she had occupied. Then a guard came running.
“Alpha, bad news,” he shouted. Julian looked at him with a frown. He didn't get up.
“What is it?” he asked the wolf.
“The market. It was attacked,” he yelled. The wolves around, including the alpha, finally got to their feet. Without hesitating, the alpha sped towards the market. But what he saw surprised him.
Aveline stood in front of a dead wolf, covered in blood. He froze. The words of the market people slipped into his ears.
“What happened?” he asked a man who had been talking nonstop.
The man didn't turn around to see who it was.
“A rogue would suddenly attack, and Aveline saves everyone. But the Luna. The guards had called Luna, but I heard she was in a bad mood.” He kept on talking, but Julian had already started moving.
He instructed his beta to take care of the mess, and then he stormed towards the pack house. He marched to Seris's room and kicked the door, but when it opened she wasn't in.
He went to the small study beside her room and did the
same. Seris jumped, and then she looked at the door and saw him. From the look on his face, she knew that something had happened.
