With an effort Nerina deliberately turned away and started to walk down the drive. Her heart was still thumping against her side and she wondered if its fluttering was entirely due to the speed she had been running.
For the first time since she had started she asked herself where she was going. But her brain would not give her an answer, while the nerves of her body cried over and over again that she must escape, she must escape.
She felt as if they excited her to a frenzy against every inclination to be calm. It was no use she could not stay, she dared not. She must get away from Sir Rupert, whatever else lay before her.
The drive was long. As she walked steadily on, Nerina began to plan at least the first part of her journey. She would go to London.
