Chapter 14Owing to a series of mishaps Nerina did not arrive in London until late in the evening.
The stagecoach that carried her to Pendle broke down a mile or so from the town. One of the wheels was damaged and it was several hours before a wheelwright could be found and the coach could proceed on its way.
When finally Nerina did manage to catch a train, her progress was held up once more because of an accident on the line near Watford.
She had found it irksome when the stagecoach broke down, but at least she was able to walk on the road or sit comfortably on a farm gate and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air while she waited.
