THIRD PERSON 'S POV Lucy hailed a cab and got in. She laid her head on the headrest and closed her eyes. Her life was literally taking a weird turn and spiraling out of her control. She opened her eyes and lowered the window, watching the streetlights pouring their light into the dark road. Her mind is filled with thoughts of what her life has become. Just a few days back she could have sworn that she had married the best man. But a single night broke everything she thought she knew, and now a strange man shows up. Arrogant yet intriguing. “How does he know everything about me?” Lucy thought to herself. “Who is that interested in another’s life?” She questioned herself. None of what happened at that dinner made sense. Granted, she had saved his life in the past, but what he has already done was enough. He invested in her firm, got her deals she didn't even know about and even saved her life. And now he wants to help her get revenge? She shook her head, the thoughts almost drowning her mind. And there was something lurking in his eyes. Something she couldn't quite decipher. Something daring and dangerous but yet captivating. He looked like danger wrapped in a gift box, and she would be damned if she opened it. As the car came to a stop, she alighted. As the car drove away, she stood on the pavement and looked at her home. It now feels too unfamiliar to still call her home. The lights were on, so she knew Logan was inside. Her energy suddenly drained; she didn't have the strength to fake the smile and laughter again today. She sighed deeply and reluctantly made her way to the door. “I am home,” she said as she crossed the threshold. She could hear his footsteps making their way to her. She crouched and removed her shoes, but as she got up, a loud cracking sound echoed as his hand connected with her cheeks. Lucy's face flung to the side, and she felt the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. The time seemed to stand still. She slowly raised her hand subconsciously and rubbed her hot cheek. She blinked once and again. “I must be dreaming; Logan couldn't have hit me.” She thought to herself, but the ringing in her ear and the taste of blood in her mouth said otherwise. He clenched his fist, eyes red with anger. "Where were you?!” He yelled, veins bulging on his forehead. The sound of his voice drew Lucy out of her thoughts. “Did you just hit me?” She asked, still in denial. He glared at her, his eyes showing not a single remorse for what he just did. “And I will hit you again if you don't give me answers to my question.” He snapped. “Where were you? And who did you meet?” he spat. “I… I met with a client at Hilltop Restaurant. But is that the reason why you hit me?” Lucy asked again. The shock was gone, and the anger was starting to rise in the pit of her stomach. “A client? How can I know that it was a client you met? And why didn't you meet him in your office?” he yelled, looking down at her with disgust. "Since when did meeting clients outside of my office become a problem? This is not the first time, nor will it be the last. You are aware of this!” She yelled. “Why are you suddenly getting all riled up by a simple meeting? Is it your guilty conscience? Are you cheating and now feel like I am too?” She looked him dead in the eyes and asked the question. “Of course not! I have never and will never cheat on you,” he yelled. Lucy looked at him unblinking. Her insides hot from anger, her eyes filled with rage at the man who dared to slap her because she met up with a man, when he is in actual reality cheating on her with her secretary. Seeing the anger in her eyes, his eyes softened. “I am sorry for hitting you,” he said in a small, apologetic voice. “Well, it's actually not my fault. If you had told me that you were meeting up with a man in a restaurant and sought my permission before going, things wouldn't have ended up like that.” he said in a sickening voice, Lucy's stomach twisted. “Are you trying to turn this around and pin it on me? You are the one who just smacked me across the face like your f*****g maid!” “But I have already apologized to you. Are you going to make me apologize again?” He c****d his eyebrow. “Fine, I am sorry.” He said with no hint of remorse. “How did I not see this side of him all along? Was I so blinded, or is this a new thing?” Lucy thought to herself. She felt pity for herself. “And what is this about seeking your permission before I meet up with people?” She asked, her eyebrows raised. “I am doing all this to protect our marriage. Look at how you are looking at me, like I mean nothing. You are making me feel like I am worth nothing in this marriage. You don't respect me as the man in this marriage,” he hissed. "It's not your fault. I mean, you paid for everything when we were getting married. We even live in a house you bought. You give me allowance like a child when I should have access to your account,” he yelled. “Ohh, so this is what all this is about. He is getting apprehensive now that he is almost about to achieve his goal. He doesn't want anything to mess things up,” Lucy thought to herself. “So from now on, I am going to assert my dominance since you won't give it willingly.” He tucked his hands into his pocket and hissed. Lucy scoffed. “And you intend to do this by hitting me and demanding I take permission from you before I meet anyone?” She asked. “You seem to forget that I am a lawyer.” She said with a hint of threat. His eyes widened. “Are you threatening me now?” he yelled. Lucy pushed him aside and went inside. He rushed after her. “I am still talking to you.” Lucy stopped abruptly and swirled around. He immediately stopped in his tracks just before he hit her. “How did you know that I met you with a man at a restaurant?” she asked, her eyes narrowing in on him. “I…I…” he stuttered, unable to answer. Lucy held his gaze, waiting for his answer. He cleared his throat. “You don't need to know that. How I came to know where you were and who you met up with is irrelevant to this issue. Were you trying to keep it a secret?” “Don't worry. I already got my answer.” Lucy whirled around and stormed up the stairs. Lucy stood in front of the bathroom mirror inspecting the finger marks on her cheeks. She sighed. “These were the red flags everyone else saw except me. I was blinded by love, and this is what it got me. All this time I gave my money, love and time to a man who didn't give a flying s**t about me.” She muttered to her reflection. Tears brimmed in her eyes at the mess which was her life. “No crying, Lucy.” She pointed to her reflection and said in a bold, unwavering tone. “Now that you have seen who he really is, it's time to get your revenge. You don't need Ethan; he seems like another danger to be avoided. I will do this myself, my way.” She muttered. At the thought of Ethan, something else suddenly crossed her mind. She had met Amelia at the restaurant. “Could it…could it be her?” She thought for a moment. “Ohh, no way.” She shook her head, getting rid of the thought. “Amelia would never say such a thing to Logan.” But Ethan's words filtered into her mind. “I find it off that she knows you are married and still made that sort of insinuation,” he had said. Doubt was starting to plant seeds in her heart. But she knew her best friend. Amelia was her one and only friend, and she has never done anything to make her doubt her. “No, no, no, definitely not. It has to be caramel. She is the only person that would have done this.” She convinced herself. She trusted Amelia, and she wasn't about to allow the words of a stranger to change that. She took her bath, dressed up and slipped into her own side of the bed. She lay on the very edge, putting enough distance between her and Logan. She drew the comforter over her and closed her eyes. “I am sorry about what happened downstairs. I got anxious and acted stupid because I don't want to lose you. I love you, Lucy. I hope you put everything behind you before morning,” Logan whispered in the sweet, sultry voice Lucy had once loved. Lucy scoffed under her breath. “When I am done with you, you will be even more sorry.” She said under her breath.
