Chapter 2 – War Room

601 Words
Emily arrived at the office the next morning in full battle mode. A navy blazer over a crisp white shirt, her heels clicking with purpose as she walked into the 9 a.m. creative meeting. Her mind was sharp, her tone sharper. She hadn’t slept much—mostly tossing and turning, thinking about Jake’s smug smile and the nerve he had walking into her territory like he owned it. Inside the war room—a glass-walled space the team used for campaign brainstorming—everyone was already seated, eyes bouncing between the large screen and Jake, who stood at the front with a remote in hand. He looked like he’d slept great. “Morning,” he said casually, clicking to the first slide. “I stayed up working on a new pitch direction. It’s bold, a little unfiltered, but it speaks to who WildNote says they are.” Emily crossed her arms. “Let’s see it.” Jake didn’t flinch. The lights dimmed, and a short sizzle reel played on the screen. Raw footage of people chasing thunderstorms, skateboarding through city streets at midnight, diving off cliffs into blue oceans. Quick cuts, loud music, unpolished beauty. The tagline hit hard: “Live Untamed. Speak Loud.” The room was silent for a beat—and then exploded with reactions. “This is amazing.” “Looks like a documentary, not a commercial. But in a good way.” “Feels more real.” Emily stayed quiet. Jake turned to her. “Thoughts?” She kept her expression neutral. “It’s good.” Jake tilted his head, smiling. “Just good?” “It’s raw,” she admitted. “Visceral. But WildNote is still a lifestyle brand. They sell watches, not skydiving dreams. You might be overpromising.” Jake stepped closer. “Or maybe I’m challenging you to stop playing it safe.” The tension between them tightened like a rope. The team could feel it—some of them exchanged glances, others stared openly. Emily exhaled slowly. “We’ll blend your vision with the core strategy. Launch day is tomorrow. No room for ego.” Jake gave a nod. “No ego here. Just excellence.” A flicker of a grin threatened to betray her serious face—but she forced it down. “Meeting adjourned,” she said, gathering her laptop. “Jake, a word?” The room cleared out faster than usual. She closed the door behind the last person and turned to face him. “I’m not here to fight,” Jake said before she could speak. “Then stop challenging me in front of the team,” Emily snapped. “You think bold is always better, but bold without control? That’s chaos.” Jake folded his arms. “Maybe. But chaos built every great brand. And like it or not, we work well together. You keep things steady. I shake things up.” She blinked. “That’s not partnership. That’s contradiction.” “It’s chemistry,” he said, eyes locked on hers. Her breath caught—for just a second. He wasn’t wrong. The friction between them wasn’t just about ideas. It was something else. Something unspoken. She stepped back, clearing her throat. “Get the final assets ready by five.” Jake nodded. “Already done.” As she turned to leave, he added quietly, “For what it’s worth… I respect the hell out of you.” Emily paused—but didn’t look back. “I don’t need your respect, Jake,” she said. “I need results.” But her heart… didn’t quite believe her.
