Chapter Six : Alone with him Avery's POV It had been thirty minutes since Kael left me… He left me horny and still dripping wet. God knows what had been so important that he had to leave me in this state. Unfortunately for me, I forgot to pack my vibrator while coming with him. Who the f**k forgets to bring their own vibrator. I slid one finger down my dripping p***y, fingering myself. My c******s to be precise, but it just didn't give me the satisfaction that Kael gave me. I had to admit I love rough s*x. I just don't know why he didn't f**k me with his c**k. Last night was pretty much one the best nights of my life; I loved the way he handled me. But I didn't know if I could trust him. Trust him enough to give him my virginity. I wasn't sure if he loved me or just saw me as his obligation because I was his mate. A knock at the door interrupted me from my train of thoughts. "Please open the door, my lady," a female voice called from outside the door. "Hold on a minute," I responded, getting off the bed and began searching for my clothes. I found them at the corner of the room. They were torn apart; then I remembered what happened last night. "That bastard tore my clothes," I sighed in frustration. I grabbed a bed sheet and used it to cover myself up. "Come in," I said to her. The maid came in carrying a plate of exquisite delicacies. "The king ordered we bring you this." "Oh, just drop it on the table," I replied. The maid did as I said and left the room. The aroma of the food flooded the room. Damn, so this is what being rich felt like. I didn't want to ever go back to being broke and poor. The sight of the food made me realize that I was actually hungry. I began to dig in and start eating. Eight hours later, he still hadn't come back. I was starting to get worried. I was too scared to leave the room—I was afraid of getting another male's scent on me. I heard a polite knock at the door. "Who is it?" I asked. "It's me, the king sent me to you." I walked over and opened the door. The maid was carrying a red gown. "The king ordered you wear this tonight; there is somewhere he plans to take you tonight," she said, no emotions in her eyes. Ordered?? I'm not some slave to be ordered around. "Oh," I said, taking the dress. "Thank you, you may leave." "He also ordered I dress you up and apply some makeup on you," she said, showing me the makeup basket she was carrying in her left hand. Ordered? That word again—I'm starting to hate that word "Oh ok, come in," I sighed. One hour later I was all dressed up in front of a mirror while she added finishing touches to my face. "You may open your eyes now, my lady," she said with a smile. I opened my eyes and looked at my reflection in the mirror. Damn, I'm so beautiful. Why am I only noticing just now? "Wow, this is so nice," I said with all sincerity. She had somehow made the makeup light and this accentuated my beauty even more. "I'm glad you like it, my lady," she smiled. "Your driver is waiting for you downstairs; he'll take you to the king" *** **Kael's POV** After heading to the pack's borders due to the emergency mindlink I had received from my beta, I began to regret it. I disliked the fact that I had to leave my mate in that horny state. But the pack comes first. I finally arrived at the pack's borders where the attacks had occurred. The rogues behind it had been apprehended. Kael's POV** After heading to the pack's borders due to the emergency mindlink I had received from my beta, I began to regret it. I disliked the fact that I had to leave my mate in that horny state. But the pack comes first. I stepped out of the black SUV, boots sinking slightly into the damp earth. The night air carried the metallic tang of blood and the sharp scent of fear. My beta, Derrick, stood over three bound rogues kneeling in the dirt, their wrists tied with silver-threaded rope that burned against their skin. Two of my warriors held them, guns and claws ready. The fourth rogue lay a few feet away in a bloody mess, throat already torn open—Derrick's work, no doubt. Efficient as always. "Report," I ordered, voice low and cold. Derrick straightened. "Three survivors. They hit the southern patrol an hour ago. Two of ours injured, nothing fatal. These mutts were probing for weak spots. Looking for a way into the heart of the territory." I walked closer, letting my alpha aura roll out. The nearest rogue flinched, eyes dropping to the ground. I crouched in front of him, grabbed his jaw hard enough to bruise, and forced his head up. "Who sent you?" He spat blood at my boots. "Go to hell, Alpha." I smiled without warmth. My hand shifted partially, claws extending just enough to dig into the soft flesh under his chin. A thin line of blood welled up. "I already live there. Answer the question" He started talking after the second claw mark. He told me it was the new rival alpha from the north, that paid them to spy on the pack and gather information on our weaknesses. I listened in silence, memorizing every name, every detail. The rogue finished speaking "Is that all? You had better not be lying" I asked. "I swear , I'm telling the truth "He trembled in fear. I could tell he has telling the truth. How dare Dominic send rogues to spy on us? He wasn't going to get away with this. I stood, wiped my claws on his shirt, and nodded once to Derrick. "Dispose of them. Make it public enough that the next group of scouts thinks twice. No mercy tonight." Derrick's eyes gleamed. "Understood." "And also, break the hands of Thomas, the chief guard" I turned away before the first scream started. The pack came first. Always. But the image of Avery—flushed, wet, looking at me like I was both salvation and damnation—would not leave my head. I had left her aching and unfinished because of these bastards. My wolf snarled inside my chest, restless and furious that our mate had been left in that state. On the drive back I already had a plan forming. A proper evening. Not just something rushed. Something that showed her she was more than an obligation, more than the human girl the Moon Goddess had dropped into my violent world. I decided we would go to a private restaurant. One of the exclusive places the pack owned in the city. I would close it down for the night so no one else would be there. Just us. Good food. Real conversation. And a red dress. I had already given the order before I even left the borders. The head housekeeper received the mindlink the moment I stepped into the vehicle. She would be dressed in black and red. Black and red. My favorite colors. Red especially. The color of the blood of every enemy who had ever tried to take what was mine. She would wear it tonight whether she liked being ordered or not. The thought of her in that color made my c**k twitch against the zipper of my jeans. By the time I reached the pack house it was late afternoon. I went straight to my private wing, stripped out of the blood smeared clothes, and stood under the scalding spray of the shower. Water ran over the scars on my chest and back—reminders of every fight that had put me in this position. I washed thoroughly, then stood there longer than necessary, hand braced against the tile, thinking of Avery's scent still clinging to my sheets. My wolf paced, demanding we go to her now. Claim her fully. Mark her so no other male would ever dare look twice. Not yet. She still didn't trust me. She still thought I might only want her because of the bond. Tonight I would start changing that. I dressed carefully: black tailored trousers, a black button-down with the sleeves rolled to the forearms, the top button left open. No tie. A simple silver watch that had belonged to my father. I checked my reflection once. Dark hair still damp, jaw shadowed with stubble I didn't bother shaving. Good enough. The restaurant was a forty-minute drive into the city. I arrived early on purpose, wanting to make sure everything was perfect. The place was already empty except for the restaurant staff I trusted. Soft lighting, one table in the center of the room, candles, the best bottle of red wine the cellar held. I sat facing the entrance and waited. She was late. Twenty minutes past the time I had told the driver. My wolf grew restless. I checked my phone once, then forced myself to set it face-down. She would come. The maid had confirmed the dress and makeup were done. Did she do this it on purpose? Show up late and make me wait like this? Is she testing me? Or was she simply just nervous? Fuck! I'm starting to overthink things. When the door finally opened I felt the shift in the air before I even saw her. Fuck!! The second my eyes landed on her,I completely lose myself in her like always. She entered the restaurant, the way light enters a quiet house at dawn—without announcement, yet changing everything it touched. Breathtaking in a way that felt almost unfair. She looked like something the dawn had created before the rest of the world was awake, delicate yet impossible to overlook. The dress was exactly what I had ordered—deep crimson silk that clung to every curve, the neckline modest enough for public but still low enough to show the soft swell of her breasts. The fabric hugged her waist and flared slightly at the hips. Her hair had been left down in soft waves, makeup light but enough to make her eyes look larger, her lips a soft rose. She looked like sin wrapped in the color of blood. My wolf surged forward so hard I had to grip the edge of the table. Mate. Beautiful. Ours. I stood slowly. She froze when she saw me, cheeks already pink. "You're late," I said, voice rougher than I intended. "I… the driver took a longer route. Or maybe I made him." She lifted her chin, trying for defiance, but her eyes kept flicking over me. "I don't like being ordered around like a doll." I walked toward her, stopping just close enough that her scent hit me fully—vanilla and something uniquely Avery, now mixed with the faint trace of the expensive perfume the maid had used. "Noted. But you look like a painting." She swallowed. I offered my arm. After a second's hesitation she took it, fingers light against my sleeve. I led her to the table, pulled out her chair, and only sat once she was settled. The waiter appeared silently, poured the wine, and disappeared again. We were completely alone in the large room. Candlelight flickered between us. I watched her take a small sip, then set the glass down carefully. "You closed the entire place?" "I don't share what's mine." The words came out before I could soften them. Her eyes narrowed slightly, but she didn't argue. For a while we ate in near silence. The food was excellent—seared scallops, rare steak, sides I barely tasted because I was too busy watching the way her throat moved when she swallowed, the way the moonlight shines on her face. My wolf was quieter now that she was close, but still alert, still hungry. Finally I leaned back slightly. "Tell me something you like. Something that has nothing to do with the pack or the bond." She looked surprised. "Why?" "Because I want to know you more, not just the mate the Goddess forced on me." Avery was quiet for a long moment, pushing a piece of asparagus around her plate. "I like rainy days. The kind where you can stay inside and not feel guilty about it. And old books. The ones that smell like dust and paper. I used to steal them from the public library when I was a kid because we couldn't afford to buy any." "What about music?" "Anything with a strong beat. Nothing soft or sad." She glanced up, a small challenge in her eyes. "What about you? What does the big bad Alpha actually like when he's not killing rogues or ordering people around?" The corner of my mouth twitched. "Honestly? Silence. Real silence, not the kind that comes before a fight. And I love the smell of rain after a long busy day. I like the way my wolf feels when we run the northern trails at dawn—no one else around, just trees and the pack land." I paused, then added, "And the color red. Specifically the shade of blood when it's still warm." She blinked, then let out a short, startled laugh. "That's… dark." "I'm a werewolf, Avery. Darkness is part of the package." She laughed again, softer this time, and the sound did something dangerous to my chest. We kept talking. She told me about the shitty apartments she and Maya had lived in, the nights she danced just to keep the lights on, the way she used to practice stripping in front of a cracked mirror because the tips were better if you looked confident. I told her about the first time I shifted, the weight of becoming Alpha too young, the enemies who had tested me for years. We argued lightly about whether pineapple belonged on pizza (she insisted it did; I told her that was a human crime). She laughed when I described Derrick's terrible cooking attempts. I found myself smiling more than I had in months. Somewhere between the main course and dessert the tension in her shoulders eased. She leaned forward when she spoke. Her eyes stayed on mine longer. My wolf settled into a low, contented rumble, still wanting more but willing to wait as long as she kept looking at me like that. When the last plate was cleared I set my napkin down. "There's somewhere else I want to take you tonight." Her expression turned cautious. "Is that an order?" "A request this time." I stood and offered my hand. "Come with me." She hesitated only a second before placing her fingers in mine. The contact sent a spark straight up my arm. I led her out to the waiting car. The drive was short—only fifteen minutes to the private medical wing the pack maintained for serious recoveries. I had made sure Maya was moved here the same night Avery first came to the pack house. Best doctors. Best security. No expense spared. Avery's grip on my hand tightened when she realized where we were. "Kael…?" "She's recovering faster than expected," I said quietly as we walked the quiet hallway. "The healers say she'll be on her feet properly within the week. I wanted you to see for yourself." I pushed open the door to the private room. Soft lamps glowed. Maya lay propped against pillows, looking pale but awake, an IV still in her arm. The bruises that had covered half her face when I first saw her were fading to yellow. She looked up and her eyes immediately filled when she saw her sister. "Avery?" Avery made a small broken sound and crossed the room in three steps, careful not to jostle the bed as she leaned down to hug her. I stayed by the door, giving them space, watching the way Avery's shoulders shook. Maya stroked her hair with a weak hand and murmured something too quiet for me to catch. After a few minutes Avery pulled back, wiping her eyes, and glanced over her shoulder at me. The look on her face was different from anything she had given me before—softer, almost stunned. I met her gaze steadily. "I told you. You're not an obligation. Neither is she" Maya's eyes moved between us, sharp even in her weakened state. She said nothing, but the small nod she gave me was enough. We stayed another twenty minutes. Avery held her sister's hand the entire time, asking quiet questions about pain levels and food and whether the nurses were treating her well. I answered the ones directed at me with short, honest replies. When Maya finally started to tire I stepped forward. "We'll come back tomorrow," I told Maya "Rest for now" In the hallway Avery was quiet. The elevator ride down was silent. Only when we reached the car did she speak, voice low. "You didn't have to do any of that. The private restaurant. The doctors. Bringing me here tonight." I opened the passenger door for her but didn't move away. "Yes I did." She looked up at me, the red dress still perfect under the streetlights, eyes shining. For the first time since I had met her, the suspicion in her expression had cracked open into something else—something that looked a lot like the beginning of belief. My wolf hummed in approval. I closed the door once she was seated, walked around to the driver's side, and started the engine. The night was far from over, but for the first time in a long while I felt like I might actually be doing something right.
