The Billionaire Who Rejected Me
Chapter 4 — The Woman Who Knows the Truth
My hands were shaking.
I read the message again.
Leave Blackwood Corporation before you become the next one.
I looked at Adrian.
“Someone knows I'm here.”
His expression changed instantly.
“Give me your phone.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“No!” I stepped backward. “You've already kept enough secrets from me.”
His eyes narrowed.
“I am trying to protect you.”
“Protect me?”
I held up the photograph.
“You protected me by making me hate you for three years?”
His jaw tightened.
“I had no choice.”
“Everyone has a choice.”
He stared at me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he reached for his phone.
“Daniel.”
His assistant answered immediately.
“Sir?”
“Lock down the building.”
There was a pause.
“Is there a problem?”
“Someone has threatened Elena.”
Daniel's voice became serious.
“Understood.”
Adrian ended the call.
I looked at him.
“I'm leaving.”
“You're not.”
“I have a job to do.”
“You're not leaving this building alone.”
I laughed.
“Three years ago, you told me you didn't want me. Today you're telling me where I can go?”
His expression softened.
“I know I don't have that right.”
“Then don't act like you do.”
I turned toward the door.
“Elena.”
I stopped.
His voice was almost a whisper.
“Please don't make me lose you again.”
I closed my eyes.
Those words hurt more than they should have.
I turned around.
“You never had me.”
Then I walked out.
The rest of the day felt strange.
People looked at me differently.
Whispers followed me through the office.
I couldn't tell whether I was imagining it or someone was actually watching me.
At lunchtime, I went to the cafeteria.
I sat alone.
Then a woman placed a tray across from me.
“May I?”
I looked up.
She was beautiful, confident and perfectly dressed.
“Sure.”
She sat down.
“My name is Victoria.”
“I'm Elena.”
“I know.”
I frowned.
“How?”
She smiled.
“Everyone knows who you are.”
Something about her made me uncomfortable.
“You knew Adrian before me, didn't you?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Yes.”
“How well?”
Victoria looked around before lowering her voice.
“Better than you think.”
My heart started beating faster.
“What does that mean?”
She leaned closer.
“Three years ago, Adrian wasn't the man you think he was.”
I stared at her.
“What happened?”
Victoria hesitated.
“Did he tell you about his father?”
“No.”
“His family?”
“No.”
“The woman who died?”
I froze.
“What woman?”
Victoria's eyes moved toward the cafeteria entrance.
Then she whispered:
“His fiancée.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Adrian was engaged?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
I stared at her.
Three years ago.
The same year he rejected me.
“Who was she?”
Victoria looked directly into my eyes.
“Her name was Sophia.”
“What happened to her?”
“She died.”
“How?”
Victoria didn't answer.
“Victoria.”
“She fell from the Blackwood Tower.”
My stomach turned.
“Was it an accident?”
Victoria looked away.
“That's what everyone said.”
“But you don't believe it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
She leaned closer.
“Because the night before she died, Sophia called me.”
My heart pounded.
“What did she say?”
Victoria's face became pale.
“She told me she had discovered something about Adrian's family.”
“What?”
Before she could answer, someone suddenly grabbed my shoulder.
I screamed.
A security guard stood behind me.
“Ms. Carter, Mr. Blackwood wants you upstairs.”
I looked at Victoria.
She had already stood up.
“Wait!”
But she walked away quickly.
I followed the security guard toward the elevator.
When the doors opened, I stepped inside.
Just before they closed, I noticed Victoria standing at the end of the hallway.
She was watching me.
And she looked terrified.
When I entered Adrian's office, he was standing beside the window.
“You were talking to Victoria.”
It wasn't a question.
“How do you know?”
“Because I know her.”
I crossed my arms.
“She told me about Sophia.”
Adrian went completely still.
“Who told you?”
“Victoria.”
His face became cold.
“You need to stay away from her.”
“Why?”
“She isn't who you think she is.”
I laughed.
“That's funny.”
“What?”
“Everyone keeps telling me that.”
I stepped closer.
“Victoria says your fiancée died three years ago.”
Adrian didn't answer.
“Is it true?”
“Yes.”
“Was she murdered?”
His eyes darkened.
“We don't know.”
“Did she discover something about your family?”
He looked at me.
Then he said:
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“What did she discover?”
Adrian walked toward his desk.
Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
The entire building became dark.
I heard a loud crash from somewhere outside.
Then another.
Bang!
I jumped.
“Adrian?”
“Stay behind me.”
He pulled me closer.
A red emergency light came on.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Someone broke into the security room.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
The phone rang again.
This time, it was my phone.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown Number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Elena… don't trust Adrian.”
The call ended.
I looked at Adrian.
He was staring at me.
Then his eyes moved toward the office door.
Because beneath the door…
a thin line of blood was slowly spreading across the floor.
