The Billionaire Who Rejected Me
Chapter 6 — Sophia
I stared at the photograph on Adrian's phone.
A woman stood outside a hospital wearing a long black coat.
Her face was partially hidden, but something about her felt familiar.
“That's her?” I whispered.
Adrian nodded.
“Sophia.”
“But she's supposed to be dead.”
“I told you. Someone wanted us to believe she was.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“You always say that.”
His eyes met mine.
“This time, I'm telling you the truth.”
I looked back at the photograph.
“Take me to her.”
“No.”
My head snapped toward him.
“What?”
“You're staying out of this.”
I laughed.
“After everything you've dragged me into?”
“Elena, whoever is behind this has already attacked a security guard.”
“And they're threatening me.”
“Exactly.”
“Then I have a right to know why!”
Adrian slammed his hand against the steering wheel.
“Because I'm terrified!”
I went silent.
He took a deep breath.
“I've spent three years trying to keep you safe.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“And now they're coming after you again.”
I stared at him.
For the first time, I realized something.
Adrian wasn't angry.
He was scared.
Scared for me.
Before I could respond, his phone rang.
“Daniel.”
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Where?”
A pause.
“Don't touch anything. I'm coming.”
He ended the call.
“What happened?”
“Someone broke into my house.”
My stomach dropped.
“Your house?”
He nodded.
“And they left something for you.”
“For me?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Adrian's mansion.
Police cars surrounded the property.
I stepped out of the car.
The front door was broken.
Inside, everything was destroyed.
Pictures had been torn from the walls.
Drawers were open.
Glass covered the floor.
A police officer approached Adrian.
“Mr. Blackwood, whoever did this knew exactly what they were looking for.”
“What did they take?”
“We don't know yet.”
Adrian looked at me.
Then another officer walked toward us carrying a small box.
“Sir, we found this in your bedroom.”
Adrian took it.
There was a name written across the top.
ELENA CARTER.
My blood ran cold.
“Open it,” Adrian said.
The officer handed him a pair of gloves.
Adrian opened the box.
Inside was the silver necklace.
The same necklace I had given him three years ago.
The one he had rejected.
I stared at it.
“How…”
Adrian looked at me.
“I kept it.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“You said you didn't want it.”
“I lied.”
He picked up the necklace.
There was something attached to it.
A tiny piece of paper.
Adrian unfolded it.
His face became completely pale.
“What does it say?” I asked.
He didn't answer.
“Adrian.”
He handed it to me.
I read the message.
You should have married Sophia.
My hands began to shake.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
Now Elena will pay for your mistake.
I looked at Adrian.
“Why me?”
He didn't answer.
Then his phone rang again.
Unknown number.
Adrian answered.
“Who is this?”
A woman's voice came through.
I couldn't hear the words clearly.
Then Adrian's face changed.
The woman said something.
He dropped the phone.
“Adrian?”
He looked at me.
“She wants to meet you.”
“Who?”
His voice was barely audible.
“Sophia.”
I stared at him.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“Where?”
He picked up his phone.
“She gave us an address.”
I looked toward the broken front door.
Something told me this wasn't a meeting.
It was a trap.
But there was only one way to find out.
I looked at Adrian.
“Let's go.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“Three years ago, you made a decision for me.”
I held his gaze.
“You're not doing it again.”
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then he finally nodded.
“Fine.”
He reached for my hand.
“Then we go together.”
But neither of us noticed the small camera hidden across the street.
Someone was watching us.
And on a phone screen, a message appeared:
They're going to the meeting.
A second message followed.
Good. Start the next part of the plan.
