CHAPTER 6: WHY DON'T YOU STAY PUT

837 Words
Lizzie’s POV Back in the office, while we waited, Nyla was busy on her phone FaceTiming Jack. Of course. Her laughter filled the room, light and deliberate, like she wanted me to hear every second of it. I chose to ignore it. Or at least… I tried to. “Jack, you’re so annoying,” she giggled, flipping her hair slightly as she adjusted the camera. I looked away, focusing on anything else: the walls, the table, my own hands. I wasn’t going to react. Not anymore. Whatever they had, Whatever I thought we had, It's over. Still, the ache lingered quietly in my chest, refusing to disappear. Then suddenly, the door opened. Dorian stepped in, his expression calm as ever. “We are ready,” he said. I straightened slightly, about to stand “But only Miss Nyla will come in. Miss Reed, you can wait here. It will be quick.” For a second, I thought I heard him wrong. Only Nyla? I blinked, caught off guard. Beside me, Nyla lit up instantly, like she had just been chosen as the winner of some grand competition. “Of course,” she said smoothly, already standing. I felt it then, a small sting. Sharp, Unexpected But I pushed it down. Because what exactly was that? Before I could question it further, Dorian turned slightly toward me. “My apologies for the inconvenience,” he said politely. But his expression didn’t change. Not even a little. Then he led Nyla out. And just like that, I was alone. The door clicked shut behind them. Silence followed. I sat there for a moment, staring at nothing, my fingers slowly curling against my lap. What was that? A quiet scoff escaped me. “Professional,” I muttered under my breath. So this was professionalism now? Bringing two people only to pick one like it was some kind of audition? I leaned back slightly, exhaling. It shouldn’t bother me, but it did. Not because of Nyla, Not even because of Jack. But because of the way it happened. Cold, Dismissive Like I didn’t matter. My jaw tightened. Fine. If they didn’t need me, then I wouldn’t force myself into it. Time had passed, and I was still yet to see Nyla return. I had waited for almost two hours, so I decided to go out. I stepped out of the office, and everywhere seemed quiet. The building felt even bigger than I expected. “This place is huge…” I muttered to myself as I kept walking. I wasn’t even sure where I was going anymore. At some point, I saw a door slightly ajar. I don’t know why I opened it—I guess I was just curious. When I stepped inside, I froze. There was a figure in the faint light. My heart skipped. “I… I’m sorry. I was just leaving,” I said quickly, already turning back. But then I heard it. A cold voice. “Why don’t you stay put?” I stopped. Something about the tone made my body go still before my mind could even react. Slowly, I turned back, and then I saw him clearly. He stepped forward into the faint light. Tall. Light-skinned, handsome and gave this aura that seemed more cold than Dorian … My breath caught slightly. I didn’t even realize I was staring until his voice cut through again. “Are you done staring?” he asked flatly. “Um… I— I’m sorry,” I said quickly, my voice confused. “I’m Lizzie. I just… wandered in here. I didn’t mean to intrude.” “I see,” he said, "Calm and controlled. Too calm. And then it hit me, What he had said earlier. “Stay put.”My brows furrowed slightly. “I’m sorry, but what do you mean I should stay put?” I asked carefully. He didn’t answer. He just looked at me quietly. Like I wasn’t supposed to be asking questions at all. Then he spoke again. “What are you still doing in this company?” “I was looking for my way out,” I said honestly. His expression didn’t change. “By entering closed doors?” he said, his voice lower now. And then Before I could respond His voice dropped even lower, right behind my ear. I didn’t even hear him move. “I don’t like people who wander where they don’t belong.”My body went completely still. Frozen. SEBASTIAN POV Alone inside the room thinking about her don't know why when she suddenly came inside “ Why don't you stay put" the words just came out because no matter how I've been trying to avoid her she pops up from nowhere ……………………………………… …………………………………….. .
