Chapter 12: The Alpha Who Stayed

1144 Words
The Great Hall was silent. Aria was still in Kael's arms. Her legs had given way, but her eyes were open. Brown again. Human again. The silver light was gone, but the small white flowers that had bloomed around her feet were still there. Real. Fragrant. Glowing faintly. No one dared to touch them, as if touching something blessed. Kael looked down at her. His black wolf, who had never bowed to anyone, not even to the Alpha King, was quiet inside him. For the first time in two years, his wolf was not angry. He was... at peace. Resting. "Can you stand?" Kael whispered, only for her, his voice soft, nothing like the cold Alpha who had thrown her out two years ago. Aria nodded weakly. "Put me down." He set her on her feet slowly, but kept one arm around her waist. She was trembling, not from fear, but from the power that had just torn through her. Her body was not used to holding Lyra awake. Elder Mara stepped closer. Her old eyes were full of tears, shining. "Child... your wolf. What is her name? You said Lyra?" "Lyra," Aria said, her voice hoarse. "She... she was sleeping. Since Jax died." The name Jax made the pack flinch. Kael's brother. The former Alpha. Aria's first mate, who died on the battlefield two years ago. The night she became a cursed widow. "She didn't die," Elder Mara said, touching the faint mark on Aria's shoulder that was glowing again, a small crescent moon. "The trauma... your heart broke. So she went to sleep to protect you. She was healing you from inside." Kael's jaw tightened. He remembered that night clearly. The night Jax's body was brought back. Aria had screamed, and screamed, and then gone silent for hours. For two years, she had no wolf. No scent. The pack called her wolfless. Cursed. He had called her a burden. Shame burned in his chest, hot and heavy. "I'm sorry," he said suddenly. Loud enough for the whole hall to hear. His voice broke. Everyone gasped. Kael had never apologized to anyone in his life. Aria looked up at him, shocked, her brown eyes wide. "I rejected you because I thought you were weak. Wolfless. I told you that you could never be my Luna. That you were my brother's widow and nothing more." His voice cracked, raw. "I was wrong. You were never wolfless. You were carrying a White Wolf. A Blessed Luna. And I was too blind to see it." The hundred wolves still on their knees looked at their Alpha. Kael had never knelt. Kael had never said sorry. Aria felt Lyra stir inside her, but this time not angry. He means it, Lyra whispered, her voice soft now, not angry. His wolf recognizes us. He is not lying. His wolf is crying. "Kael..." Aria started. "No," he said. He slowly, deliberately, went down on one knee again. Not because his wolf forced him this time. Because he wanted to. He took her hand, the same hand he had refused to touch for two years. "Aria of the White Wolf, will you... will you let me stand beside you? Not as an Alpha who commands his Luna, but as a mate who has to earn his Luna back?" Gasps echoed in the hall. The Alpha King on one knee, asking. Elder Mara smiled through her tears, her voice shaking. "The prophecy says - when the pack is at war, Lyra will return. Our pack has been at war with itself, child. Divided. Judging you." Aria looked at the pack. At the faces that had called her cursed. Some were crying. Some were looking down in shame. They had judged a grieving girl. She took a deep breath. The scent of the white flowers filled her lungs. It calmed her. "I don't want revenge," she said, her voice clearer now. Everyone heard it. Every wolf in the hall heard her. "Lyra wanted everyone to kneel. To feel the pain we felt for two years. But I... I don't want that." She looked at Kael, still on his knee, his golden eyes looking up at her, vulnerable. "Get up, Kael." He stood, confused. "I will not be a Luna who rules by fear," Aria said, turning to the pack, her voice growing stronger with every word. "I was called cursed. Widowed. Wolfless. I lived in the kitchen for two years while you all whispered. If I wanted revenge, I could have let Lyra take over tonight. She would have... A shiver went through the wolves. She would have made you all bow to the next girl. Whoever she is." She swayed again, dizzy. Kael caught her instantly, his arms around her. "Enough," Elder Mara said firmly. "She needs rest. Her wolf has just woken up after two years. It takes energy. It takes strength. Alpha, take your Luna to your chambers. No one will speak of tonight until you allow it. No one will touch those flowers." Kael nodded and lifted Aria again. This time, she didn't protest. She rested her head on his shoulder, exhausted, her cheek against his warm neck. As he carried her out of the Great Hall, past the hundred kneeling wolves and the glowing white flowers that lit the dark hall like stars, Lyra whispered one last thing to Aria, her voice sleepy but happy. We are not cursed anymore, Aria. We are Blessed. And he... he will never leave us again. He finally sees. Aria closed her eyes. For the first time since Jax died, she felt safe in Kael's arms. Not because he was strong, but because finally, he stayed. Outside the Great Hall, the moon was full. Bright, huge, silver. And for the first time in a hundred years, it was shining directly on the Alpha's house, blessing the White Wolf that had returned. . Rhys's arm was still around me. The crowd was still chanting. I had never felt so seen and so scared at the same time. For three years I was invisible, and now everyone was looking at me. Lyra was calm now, but I could feel her pride. You did well, Elara, she whispered. You showed mercy when you could have shown cruelty. That is what makes a true Luna. I looked at Rhys. He was looking at the crowd but his eyes kept coming back to me, checking if I was okay. He is changed, Lyra said. His wolf has accepted us. He will not hurt us again. I hope you are right, I told her. Because if he does, I will not be the same weak Elara he married. I am blessed now. I have power. And I have a pack to protect. My revenge is not about killing, it is about rising. And tonight, I have risen.
