Chapter 13: The Luna Who Chose Mercy

1046 Words
The morning after the Great Hall, the entire Blood Moon pack was whispering. No one could sleep. How could they? They had seen a White Wolf. A Blessed Luna. A girl they had called wolfless and cursed for two years, glowing with silver light, flowers blooming under her feet in winter. Aria woke up in a room she had not seen in two years. The Luna's chambers. It was huge, warm, with a big fire burning, furs on the bed, and the scent of pine and rain. Not the cold widow's hut where the roof leaked and the wind came through the cracks. For two years she had slept on the floor there. She sat up, confused. Her body ached, but it was a different ache. Like after a long run. Lyra was awake inside her, stretching happily. Good morning, Aria. We slept in a real bed. Do you remember the last time we had a real bed? Before Jax died. Aria touched her shoulder. The crescent mark was still there, faintly silver, warm to the touch. Then she remembered last night. The flowers. Kael on one knee. The pack kneeling. "Did that really happen?" she whispered. As if answering, the door opened. Elder Mara came in with a tray of hot soup and bread. Her old eyes were shining, no longer full of pity, but full of pride. "You are awake, my child. My Blessed Luna." Aria felt shy. "Elder Mara, please don't call me that. I am just Aria." "You are not just Aria anymore," Mara said, sitting beside her, touching her forehead. "How do you feel? Your first shift, even a partial one, takes energy. Especially after two years of your wolf sleeping." "My head hurts a little. And I am hungry. Very hungry." Mara laughed. "That is normal. Your wolf is awake, she needs food. Eat. Eat all of it." While Aria ate, Mara talked, her voice low. "Kael has not left the door all night. He stood outside like a guard. He refused to go to his own room. He said his wolf would not let him leave you unprotected. Not after what happened." Aria stopped eating. "He stayed? All night?" "Yes. An Alpha King, sleeping on the floor outside a Luna's door. The whole pack saw it this morning. They finally understand. He did not just feel sorry for you. He... he marked you in his heart, even if he didn't know it." Lyra purred inside Aria's head. I told you. His black wolf is obsessed with us now. He knows we are his. Before Aria could answer, there was a knock. "Come in," Mara said. Kael entered. He looked tired, his hair messy, his eyes had dark circles. But when he saw Aria awake, sitting up, his whole face changed. His golden eyes softened. "You are awake." Aria nodded, suddenly shy, pulling the fur up. Elder Mara stood up, smartly. "I will leave you two. Alpha, she needs to eat more. And she needs to understand what happened. Don't scare her with your Alpha voice." When Mara left, the room became quiet. Too quiet. Kael sat on the edge of the bed, not too close, giving her space. "Aria, about last night..." "I remember," she said quickly. "You... you knelt. You apologized." "I meant it. Every word." He looked at his hands. "For two years, I told myself you were wolfless to justify sending you away. Because if you had a wolf, if you were strong, then what I did was cruel. It was easier to believe you were nothing. My brother died, and I was angry. At the world. At you for reminding me of him. So I punished you." His voice cracked. "I left a grieving 18-year-old girl in a hut with no food in winter. I called you a burden. I let my mother and the other she-wolves insult you while you cleaned the kitchen." Tears came to Aria's eyes. No one had ever admitted it. Everyone acted like it was normal. "Why are you telling me this now?" she whispered. "Because Lyra showed me the truth. That white wolf... when she looked at me, I saw everything. I saw your pain for two years. I felt it through the mate bond that I had been ignoring. And I cannot take it back, but I can stay now. If you let me." He reached out his hand slowly, asking. Aria looked at his hand. Two years ago, she would have taken it instantly, begging for love. Now, she was different. She had Lyra. "I don't know if I can forgive you yet, Kael," she said honestly. "For two years I slept on a cold floor while you slept in this room. I ate leftovers while you ate feasts. You called me cursed. My wolf was healing me and you called me empty." Kael's face fell, but he nodded. "I understand." "But..." she continued, her voice softer. "I don't want to be a Luna who hates her Alpha. The pack is already broken, divided. If you and I fight, the pack will break more. So... we can try. Slowly. You stay, like you stayed last night. You show me with actions, not just words on your knees." Lyra whispered, Good. Make him work for it. No more easy forgiveness. Kael's golden eyes lit up, hopeful. "Slowly is okay. I will stay. I will stay outside every night if I have to. I will bring you soup myself. I will make them all respect you." He leaned forward, his forehead almost touching hers, but he stopped, asking. Aria, after a moment, nodded slightly. He touched his forehead to hers. A mate's touch. Not a kiss, but a promise. His scent, pine and snow, wrapped around her. For the first time, it didn't feel cold. It felt safe. Outside, the white flowers from last night were still blooming in the Great Hall, even though it was snowing. The pack came one by one to see them, to touch them, to whisper a prayer to the Blessed Luna who had returned. And in the Luna's chambers, the Alpha Who Stayed finally kept his promise, holding his Luna while she finished her soup, his black wolf finally quiet, finally home. ---
