Chapter 11: The White Wolf

1353 Words
Aria looked up at Kael. The Alpha who had rejected her. Who had told her she would never be his Luna because she was wolfless and cursed and his brother's widow. But now he was on one knee. Not because he wanted to. Because his wolf made him. His huge black wolf was whimpering inside him, forcing his Alpha to kneel. "Don't kneel to me," Aria whispered. Her voice was shaking, barely audible in the silent Great Hall. Kael looked up. His golden eyes were struggling, fighting his own wolf. "I am not. My wolf is. He... he recognizes you. He has been restless since you entered this hall." Inside her head, Lyra laughed. Not a cruel laugh. A proud, ancient laugh that echoed. He should kneel. They all should, Aria. They put us in a cage for two years. They called us cursed while we were grieving. They made us sleep on the cold floor of the widow's hut. Now they see. Elder Mara was still crying on the floor, her old hands trembling. "The prophecy! The prophecy is true! The Blessed Luna's wolf was white as moon! It says - when the pack is at war, when all hope is lost, Lyra will return to save us!" The hundred wolves in the Great Hall were still on their knees. The air was thick with shock and awe. Some were looking at Aria with fear. Some with wonder and tears. No one had ever seen a white wolf before. Not in this generation. White wolves were only in old stories, in children's books about the Moon Goddess herself. Aria could feel her shoulder burning. The silver mark that had appeared that morning was now glowing brightly, casting silver light on the stone floor. Kael slowly stood up, his legs shaking. He held his hand out to Aria, but this time he did not grab her. He waited, asking for permission without touching her. "Aria, you need to come with me. The hall is not safe for you right now. Your power just awakened after two years of sleep, you cannot control it yet. You could hurt someone without meaning to." "She hurt no one," Elder Mara snapped, suddenly standing up and glaring at Kael. "She only showed her true form. That light did not burn anyone. It blessed us. Didn't you feel it? My old bones stopped aching when her light touched me. That is not a curse, Alpha. That is a blessing." Lyra growled inside Aria's mind, but it was a thoughtful growl. I like the old woman. She sees. But I don't like him, Aria. He told us we were nothing. Remember? On the night of Jax's funeral? He stood in our doorway and said a wolfless widow cannot stay in the Alpha house. He told us to pack our things and go to the hut. Aria remembered. How could she forget? The night Jax died on the battlefield, his body not even cold, Kael had come to her room. He had not come to comfort her. He had said coldly, "You have no wolf, Aria. You cannot stay here. You are now just a burden to the pack. My brother is dead, you are no longer his Luna. You are just a wolfless widow." Those words had broken her more than Jax's death. She had believed them for two years. Tears came to her eyes again, but this time not from sadness. From anger. A cold, silver anger. Kael saw her eyes flash silver again, bright as moonlight. "Aria, listen to me. Talk to me, not to her. If you let her take over now, right after awakening, you will lose yourself. I have seen wolves go mad when their second wolf awakens." "Maybe I want to lose myself for a little while," Aria said. Her voice was not her own anymore. It was deeper. Stronger. Echoing. It was both her and Lyra speaking together as one. "For two years you all made me sleep. You told me I was empty. You told me I was cursed. Now you are scared because I am not empty? Because I am full of light?" As she spoke, the silver mark on her shoulder glowed even brighter. The small white flowers that had bloomed around the white wolf's paws in the vision - now they were blooming around Aria's feet for real. Real, white, glowing flowers. On the cold stone floor of the Great Hall in the middle of winter. Everyone gasped and stepped back. Kael took a step back too. His own wolf, a huge black wolf that everyone in the North feared, was whimpering inside him loudly now. Not in anger. In pure submission to the white wolf. "Enough, Lyra," Aria whispered to herself, to the wolf inside. She closed her eyes and focused on her breathing, the way Elder Mara had taught her years ago. "Not now. Not like this. We don't want revenge like this. We are not like them." Lyra was quiet for a moment, considering. Then she said, softer this time, almost sad. You are too kind, Aria. That is why they used you. That is why Jax's mother could slap you and you stayed quiet. But okay. We will wait. We will show them who we are slowly. But they will not treat us like a slave again. Never again. Promise me. "I promise," Aria whispered out loud. The silver light slowly faded. The flowers around her feet stayed, glowing softly, but they stopped spreading. Aria's eyes went back to their normal brown. The power receded, and with it came exhaustion. Two years of sleeping wolf waking up took everything. She felt dizzy. Her legs gave up and she fell forward. Kael caught her before she hit the floor. His arms were strong. This time, his touch did not burn. It did not feel cold or cruel. It felt steady, warm, like an anchor. He picked her up in his arms as if she weighed nothing. He looked at his pack, his face now hard as Alpha King again. "No one will speak of what happened tonight until I allow it. No one will call her cursed again. No one will call her wolfless widow. She is... she is Blessed by Luna herself. She is our White Wolf. Do you understand?" The pack howled in answer. A low, deep, respectful howl that shook the Great Hall. Not for Kael. For Aria. For the first time, they were howling for her. Elder Mara came forward and touched Aria's forehead gently, her eyes full of tears. "Child, you have been sleeping for two years, but now you are awake. Your wolf was not dead, Aria. She was healing you. Jax's death broke your heart into a thousand pieces, and Lyra went to sleep to protect you from that pain. She waited until you were strong enough." Aria, in Kael's arms, her consciousness fading, whispered, "Jax... my Jax... he would have believed..." Kael's face became hard as stone when he heard his dead brother's name. Jealousy flashed in his golden eyes. But he said nothing. He held her tighter and carried her out of the Great Hall, past the staring wolves, towards the Luna's old chambers that had been locked for years since his mother died. "Where are you taking me?" Aria asked weakly, her eyes closing. "To where you belong," Kael said, his voice low, only for her. "Not to the widow's hut. Not to the servants' quarters. To the Luna's room. If you are what Mara says you are... then this pack needs you more than ever. War is coming from the South. Rogues are at our borders. And we just found our White Wolf. Our blessing." Inside her head, Lyra purred happily, even as she went back to sleep, tired from her first appearance. Luna's room. Finally. A proper bed. A warm fire. No more cold floor. And for the first time in two years, Aria smiled, a small, true smile, even as she lost consciousness in the Alpha's arms, surrounded by glowing white flowers.
