The warehouse fell silent.
Dante stood in the shadows, his shirt stained with blood. Not his own. Enzo's men had fought hard, but they were no match for Dante's soldiers.
Elena walked toward him. Her legs were shaking.
"It's really over?" she asked.
"Enzo is dead. His men surrendered. The Rossi family has no leader."
"Will someone else take his place?"
"Not tonight. Maybe not ever."
Dante took her hand. Led her to the car.
"Let's go home."
---
The drive back to the mansion was quiet.
Elena watched the city lights pass by. The streets were calm. No one knew what had happened tonight. The violence was invisible to the outside world.
"You're quiet," Dante said.
"I'm thinking."
"About what?"
"About what comes next. We've been fighting for so long. I don't know how to just... live."
Dante reached over. Took her hand.
"We learn. Together."
---
The mansion was lit up when they arrived.
Rosa was waiting at the door. Her face was pale.
"You're both alive."
"Barely," Elena said.
Rosa pulled her into a hug. "I was so scared."
"We're okay. Thanks to Dante."
Dante walked past them. "I'm going to shower. Elena, come find me when you're ready."
He disappeared upstairs.
Rosa looked at Elena. "He's different with you."
"Different how?"
"Softer. More human."
"I hope that's a good thing."
"It is. He needed someone like you."
---
Elena walked to the study.
The room was untouched. The fire crackled. The chairs were empty.
She sat behind Dante's desk. Ran her fingers over the wood.
This was not her life. Not really. She was a college student. A daughter. A normal person.
But she had killed a man. She had watched Dante kill. She had become part of a world she never imagined.
The door opened. Dante walked in. His hair was damp. He wore a black sweater and gray pants.
"You're thinking too hard," he said.
"I'm processing."
"Come here."
She stood. Walked to him. He pulled her into his arms.
"I never thanked you," he said.
"For what?"
"For staying. For fighting. For not running when you should have."
"I didn't stay for you. I stayed for us."
He kissed her forehead. "I love you, Elena."
"I love you too."
---
The next morning, Elena woke in Dante's bed.
Sunlight streamed through the windows. The birds were singing. For the first time in weeks, there was no fear.
She stretched. Turned to look at him.
He was already awake. Watching her.
"You're staring again."
"You're worth staring at."
She smiled. "What's on the schedule today?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"No meetings. No calls. No violence. Just us."
Elena sat up. "I don't know what to do with a day of nothing."
"Neither do I. But we'll figure it out."
---
They spent the morning in the garden.
Dante showed her the roses his mother had planted. The ones he had kept for years.
"These are my favorite," he said, pointing to a bush of white roses.
"Why white?"
"They were her favorite. She said white meant peace."
"Then let's plant more."
Dante looked at her. "You want to plant roses?"
"I want to plant peace. Roses are just a bonus."
He laughed. A real laugh. "You're something else, Elena."
"So you've said."
---
In the afternoon, they drove to see her father.
He was staying in a small apartment. Protected by Dante's men.
Marco opened the door. His eyes widened when he saw Elena.
"Elena!"
He pulled her into a hug. She held him tight.
"I'm okay, Papa."
"I was so worried."
"It's over. Enzo is dead."
Marco looked at Dante. "Thank you for protecting her."
"She protected herself," Dante said. "I just gave her the tools."
They sat in the small living room. Talked about the future. About Marco staying sober. About Elena finishing college.
Dante listened. Did not interrupt.
When they left, Marco hugged Elena again. "Come back soon."
"I will. I promise."
---
That night, they ate dinner on the porch.
The stars were bright. The air was cool.
"I want to go back to school," Elena said.
"Then go."
"I want to graduate. Get a degree. Be something other than your girlfriend."
"You'll always be my girlfriend. But you can also be whatever you want."
She smiled. "You're not going to stand in my way?"
"I'm going to pave the road for you."
Elena kissed him. "I don't need paved roads. I just need you beside me."
---
Later, in bed, they held each other.
"The Rossi family is gone," Dante said. "The Moretti family is next. Then I step back."
"How long will that take?"
"Months. Maybe a year."
"And after?"
"After, we travel. See the world. Build a life."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Promise me something."
"Anything."
"Promise me that one day, we'll be normal."
Dante kissed her head. "I promise."
They slept in each other's arms.
The war was over.
The future was bright.
And they were finally free.
