Chapter 20: The Promise

719 Words
The week after Moretti's death was the quietest Elena had ever known. No guns. No threats. No shadows watching from the gates. Dante slept through the night for the first time in months. Elena woke beside him each morning, and for a moment, she forgot about the war. But the war had left marks. Dante woke from nightmares he would not describe. Elena found him standing at the window at 3 AM, staring at the garden. She walked to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Tell me." "I can't." "Then let me hold you until the sun comes up." He turned and buried his face in her hair. "I don't deserve you." "You deserve everything." Rosa noticed the change. She said nothing. She just cooked larger meals and left flowers in Elena's room. Small kindnesses. The kind that healed. Elena's father called every day. He was still sober. Still working at the shop. "When are you coming to visit?" he asked. "Soon, Papa. Dante wants to come with me." "He wants to meet me?" "He wants to ask for your blessing." Marco was silent for a long time. "He already has it. He saved your life." "He wants to do it properly." "Then I will make dinner." The next morning, Dante received a visit from his top lieutenants. They gathered in the study. Elena sat beside him. Not behind him. Beside him. "The other families want a formal truce," one man said. "They are afraid of you. Moretti was powerful, and you destroyed him in one night." "What are their terms?" Dante asked. "They want territory lines respected. They want to run their businesses without interference." "And what do they offer in return?" "Loyalty. They will not move against you again." Dante looked at Elena. She nodded. "Agree to the truce," she said. "But make them come to you. Make them sign it in this room." The men looked surprised. Dante smiled. "You heard her. Arrange the meeting." The truce was signed three days later. Four men entered the mansion nervous and left relieved. Dante had been generous. Elena had advised him to be. "If you crush them, they will fight to the death. If you give them something, they will protect what they have." It was the first time she had shaped his decisions. It would not be the last. That night, they sat in the garden. The roses were still blooming. "You were right about the truce," Dante said. "I usually am." He laughed. "You're impossible." "So you've said." He took her hand. "I've been thinking about your college applications." "And?" "Apply anywhere you want. I will pay for everything." Elena kissed him. "I don't need your money. I need your support." "You have it." She applied to three universities the next day. Dante watched her fill out the forms. "You're nervous." "What if they reject me?" "Then you apply again. You're not someone who gives up." She smiled. "Neither are you." Rosa started planning the wedding. Elena had not agreed to a date, but Rosa was already looking at venues. "I want a garden," Elena said. "Roses?" "Lots of roses." Rosa nodded. "I will make it happen." Her father visited the mansion for the first time. He stood in the foyer, looking at the marble floors and crystal chandeliers. "You live here?" "I live with Dante. The house is his." Marco hugged her. "You've come so far, Elena. Your mother would be proud." Dante came downstairs. He was dressed simply. Black sweater. Dark pants. He shook Marco's hand. "Thank you for coming." "Thank you for taking care of my daughter." "She takes care of herself. I just stand beside her." They ate dinner together. The conversation was easy. The food was good. When Marco left, he hugged Elena at the door. "He's a good man." "I know, Papa." "He loves you." "I know that too." That night, Elena lay in Dante's arms. "What happens now?" she asked. "Now we live. We build something good." "Together." "Always." She closed her eyes. For the first time in her life, she was not afraid of tomorrow. She had a man who loved her. A father who was healing. A future that was her own. The war was over. The peace had begun. And Elena was finally free.
