Chapter1. Ashley

1102 Words
My name is Ashley Andrews and I’m twenty four years old. My best friend Adam langster is twenty five and we were currently sitting on a plane in Canada flying to el dorado California. That’s where I’m originally from but Adam had to apply for permanent residency and he recently got through. I sighed as I looked at my best friend who was joking away and had me in a laughing fit. The passengers on the plane kept giving us weird looks, but I didn’t care. He was and always will be the best thing that had ever happened to me. We met when he was nineteen years old and when he told me his story, I was extremely protective of him and vowed to never let anyone hurt him ever again. His dark brown hair and blue eyes would catch anyone’s attention because he’s extremely handsome. Some people thought that we were a couple because of how close the two of us were, but he didn’t swing my way. At age fifteen he told his Christian parents about his sexuality, they kicked him out of their house and disowned him and he had been on his own ever since. He lived on the streets for such a long time my heart broke for him everytime I remember what he had been through. He walked in my life four years later after he came to the diner I worked at looking for a job and we hit it off right away. He told me he was currently homeless and in need of a place to live so since I knew the owner of the diner so well, I asked if Adam could stay in the room upstairs the diner since it was unoccupied. I don't know why but there was something about him I trusted and I just met the guy! The owner agreed right away after she told Adam that he was hired and he was really happy, he worked hard to ensure he pays back the owner. Adam always wanted to be a chef so during the time he worked at the diner, he went to class and his hard work and dedication allowed him to become successful and that got him to become one of the top chefs at the diner. He told me that when he was younger, his parents used to feed him and his brother on ramen noodles only and that’s why he wanted to be the best chef there is. He wanted to teach me how to cook, but I was bad at it since I was only the head waitress there at the diner I told him not to bother teaching me because I would never learn. The room above the diner was a one bedroom, one bath and no kitchen, Adam was just happy he was finally off the street and into a place he could call home and I was even more happy that I met him and could help him focus on who he really is instead of hiding his s*******y. “ monkey butt are you listening to me?” I laughed at his many nick names for me which had him laughing with me as well. Gosh these passengers must be getting really tired of us right now. “ sorry I spaced out a bit, what were you saying?” I raised my eyebrow at him and he shook his head. “ well since we are heading to your grandmother’s farm in el dorado, I wanted to know how the two of us are going to take care of so many animals in the first place. I mean it’s a good thing we finally got to pack up and leave together, but another thing is that we have so much task ahead of us already.” I nodded my head because he was right. “ I don’t know how we are going to do it all Adam but we will think of something. Remember we are in this together.” I pinched him on his arm and he squealed like a girl. “ why are you being so abusive to me right now?” I laughed and stuck my tongue out at him. I graduated college two years ago and since I majored in liberal arts, I thought I could land a good job but nothing came up. No matter how hard I tried it’s like I couldn’t get a job with my degree. So I ended up working at a diner instead which I didn’t regret doing at all. I have met some wonderful people at that time and I made a lot of tips which I saved up. I am going to have to use the money to help pay off my grandmother’s debt and hopefully we can sell a couple animals as well. I fell asleep with a lot on my mind. It was going to be a lot of hard work, taking care of so many animals. I hope that we could sell most of them so we don’t have to worry about anything financial wise. My grandmother once told me that the area she lives in most of the residence there would always support her, so I guess I should stop worrying and hope that she’s right and we do get the support that we need. There’s also an orchard there on the land and I planned on getting some workers as well so we can sell the fruits when it’s time. I know that Adam is a bit worried, especially since we just packed up and left everything in Canada to go to a different place to live. Adam never once set foot outside Canada so I know this will all be new to him. After sleeping for some time, I felt a nudge on my shoulder and felt as someone stuck their finger in my ear. I squealed and woke up to finding Adam laughing really hard at me. I punched him and he stopped. “ hey no need for that, I’m just really bored here and you’re sleeping away like sleeping beauty. Come on I need your company woman.” I shook my head and yawned still feeling a bit tired. By the rate Adam is going I’ll probably have to kill him, or not. “ Adam stop acting like a child.” I hissed and he held his hands up in surrender. The rest of the flight was spent with me arguing with Adam about waking me up from my beauty sleep. No matter what I’m really looking forward to this.
