CHAPTER 12: THE CHOICE
Ethan got the call on a Tuesday.
"Mr. Carter, the board needs you back. Full time. CEO.
We’re offering 40 million bonus. Plus full control."
He was in the kitchen. Helping Ava Jr. with homework.
Glitter everywhere.
"Let me think about it," Ethan said. And hung up.
Ava was in the garden. 7 months pregnant.
She saw his face. "What happened?"
"They want me back," Ethan said. "Full time.
Board meetings. Flights. 16 hour days."
Ava didn’t say anything. She just waited.
"If I go back, I lose this," Ethan said.
He gestured to the house. To the glitter. To her.
"If I stay, Home & Co might fall," Ethan continued.
"5000 employees. Their families."
Ava came to him. "So what are you gonna do?"
Ethan looked at her. Really looked.
"5 years ago I would’ve said yes in 2 seconds.
Money. Power. That’s all I knew."
He took her hand. Put it on his chest.
"But now I know what I’m fighting for.
And it’s not in a boardroom."
---
THE PRESS CONFERENCE
2 days later. Cameras. Lights.
Ethan stood alone at the podium. No suit. Just jeans and a shirt.
"5 years ago I signed a contract to get married," he said.
The room went silent.
"I thought I wanted money. I thought I wanted control.
I was wrong."
He pulled out a photo. Him, Ava, Ava Jr.
Mud on their faces from the garden.
"I’m stepping down as CEO of Home & Co. Permanently.
I’m appointing Priya as permanent CEO.
And I’m going home."
Gasps.
"Because the most important company I’ll ever run
isn’t Home & Co. It’s my family."
He walked off. No questions.
---
THAT NIGHT
The internet broke. #HeChoseHer was trending worldwide.
Ethan’s phone died from notifications.
Ava turned it off.
They were in the garden. Swinging.
"You don’t regret it?" Ava asked.
Ethan pulled her close. "The only thing I regret
is every day I spent before I met you."
Ava cried. Not sad tears.
The kind that come when something heavy finally leaves.
"I was so scared," Ava whispered. "That you’d choose them.
Choose the money. Choose to leave."
Ethan kissed her tears. "I chose you 5 years ago.
I just didn’t know it yet."
---
6 MONTHS LATER
Baby number 2 came. A boy.
They named him James. After Ethan’s dad who he never knew.
The house was louder now.
Two kids. Dogs. Mess. Life.
Ethan started a new company. From home.
"Home First."
Helping CEOs take paternity leave. Helping companies
put family first.
It made less money.
Ethan had never been happier.
Ava’s foundation hit 20 houses.
She still wrote letters to every woman.
---
THE LAST LETTER
On their 5th anniversary, a letter came.
No name. Just a postcard.
`To Ethan & Ava,
Your story saved my marriage.
We were about to sign divorce papers.
Then we read about you.
Thank you for choosing each other.
- A stranger`
Ethan framed it. Put it in the hallway.
---
TONIGHT
Kids asleep. House quiet.
Ethan and Ava were on the roof.
Looking at stars. Wine in plastic cups.
"Do you remember the contract?" Ethan asked.
Ava laughed. "How could I forget?"
"Clause 3: No feelings," Ethan said.
Ava smiled. "We broke that one first."
Ethan took her hand. "Best rule I ever broke."
They sat in silence.
No more war.
No more running.
No more pretending.
Just truth.
"I love you," Ethan said. Simple.
"I love you too," Ava said. "Even when you burn the toast."
Ethan grinned. "Even when you leave socks everywhere."
They laughed.
Above them, stars.
Around them, peace.
Between them, everything.
