CHAPTER 13: EPILOGUE
4 YEARS LATER
The house was never quiet anymore.
"DADDY! HE TOOK MY CRAYON!"
"IT WAS MINE FIRST!"
"MOMMY HELP!"
Ethan came running from his office downstairs.
Hair messy. Glasses on. "Who’s dying?"
Ava Jr., 4, had glitter on her face and fury in her eyes.
Baby James, 1, was holding the crayon like a weapon.
Ava walked in from the garden. 6 months pregnant.
Dirt on her knees. Laughing. "Good morning to you too."
Ethan pulled her in and kissed her forehead.
"Tough day at the office, Mrs. Carter?"
"The toughest," Ava smiled. "The tomatoes are fighting me."
They had 3 dogs now. And 2 kids. And chaos.
And it was perfect.
---
HOME FIRST
Ethan didn’t run Home & Co anymore.
He ran "Home First" from the office downstairs.
3 employees. All dads.
Mission: Help CEOs remember they have families.
It made 1/10th of what he used to make.
Ethan had never been richer.
He coached Ava Jr.’s soccer team. Lost every game.
He did school drop-off every morning.
He was at every parent-teacher meeting.
Priya texted him once a month: "We’re good. Go play with your kids."
He did.
---
AVA'S HOUSE
Ava’s foundation had 18 houses now. 3 countries.
Every Thursday she drove herself there.
No driver. No security. No press.
She sat on floors. She listened.
She helped women fill out job applications.
She helped them pack boxes to leave.
Every woman got a handwritten note:
`You are not what happened to you.
You are what you choose next.
You are home. - A`
The 15th house was named "Ethan’s House."
He cried when he saw the sign.
---
THE CARTER FAMILY
Mrs. Carter sent cards on birthdays.
Ethan didn’t open them. Ava did.
"She’s trying," Ava said once.
"She had 30 years to try," Ethan said.
Sophia was in Dubai. Married to a sheikh.
Posted photos of yachts.
Blocked Ethan on everything.
Victoria got out of prison 2 years ago.
Opened a small bakery in another state.
Sent one letter: "I’m sorry. I’m doing better."
Ethan didn’t reply. Ava said "That’s okay."
---
THE ANNIVERSARY
It was their 4th wedding anniversary.
No hotel. No 500 guests.
Just the garden. String lights. 50 people who loved them.
Ava wore a simple white dress. Barefoot.
Ethan wore a suit. But no tie.
Ethan stood in front of everyone. Hands shaking.
"4 years ago I signed a contract," he said.
The crowd laughed.
"1 million dollars. 6 months. No feelings. Clause 3."
He looked at Ava. She was already crying.
"I broke clause 3 in week 1," Ethan said.
"I broke every rule. And I got the best deal of my life."
He got on one knee. Again.
Pulled out the same ring.
"Ava, thank you for choosing me
when I was broken.
Thank you for staying when I was scared.
Thank you for making me a father.
Thank you for making me home."
He slipped the ring on her finger.
"I love you. Today. Tomorrow. Forever."
Ava nodded, crying. "Yes. Forever."
Ava Jr. threw petals. Baby James clapped.
The dogs barked.
It was messy. And perfect.
---
6 MONTHS LATER
Baby #3 was born. A girl.
They named her Grace.
The house was louder.
Laundry piles. Cereal on the floor.
Ethan stepped on a lego at 3am.
He wouldn’t trade it for anything.
---
TONIGHT
Kids asleep.
Ethan and Ava on the roof.
Old blanket. Two plastic cups of wine.
Stars everywhere. No city noise.
"Remember the clinic?" Ethan asked.
Ava laughed. "How could I forget? I was terrified."
"I was too," Ethan said. "But I saw you.
And I thought... she’s the bravest person I know."
Ava leaned her head on his shoulder.
Her hand on Grace who was asleep on her chest.
"Do you ever regret it?" Ava asked. "Choosing us? Over the company?"
Ethan didn’t even hesitate. "Never.
The company was my job. You are my life."
Ava cried. Happy tears. "I love you, Ethan Carter."
"I love you, Ava Carter."
Inside, the house was quiet.
On the fridge: a drawing in crayon.
5 stick figures. A house. A sun.
On top, in wobbly letters: HOME.
Ethan whispered, "We did it."
Ava whispered back, "We’re home."
No more contracts.
No more war.
No more pretending.
Just love.
Just family.
Just home.
