Chapter 6

“Every gaze felt like a blade against my skin, yet I refused to bow my spirit completely.” The training yard was crowded with Gammas, their bodies tense, eyes downcast, but the air buzzed with anticipation. Today, we were to demonstrate obedience in front of the Alpha and his inner circle—a public display of our place in the pack. Kael’s hand pressed roughly against my shoulder as he shoved me toward the center. “Show them you’re not completely useless,” he whispered, though his smirk carried no warmth. I forced my legs to move, each step heavy with exhaustion from the last days’ labor and bruises. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, muscles coiling, senses sharpened. The scent of the pack, the heat of the sun, the predatory gaze of the Alphas—it all mixed into a heady storm that made my pulse race. Valen’s golden eyes were already on me, his presence a weight that pressed down on my chest. I lowered my gaze, willing my body to stay small, obedient, invisible. And yet, even as I knelt, my wolf growled low, sensing the power thrumming around him—and inside me. The elder Gammas sneered and laughed as Kael prodded me forward. “Not fast enough, Nightbane. Move!” I obeyed, heart hammering, body trembling. Every movement was precise, calculated, a dance of survival. And yet… every instinct in me screamed, wanting more than survival. My wolf flared, muscles taut, ready to leap, ready to strike. Valen stepped closer, silent, his gaze never leaving mine. A shiver ran down my spine as I felt his control, his dominance, his hidden desire mingling with the fear I was trained to carry. Kael noticed it too. His jaw tightened, and he muttered under his breath, “She’s… changed.” “Changed or dangerous?” I heard Valen murmur, his voice low enough that only the wolf inside me seemed to catch the meaning. The crowd’s laughter intensified as I faltered slightly, my tired limbs betraying me. A murmur of mockery rippled through the Gammas. Kael laughed cruelly, raising his hand as if to strike me again—but before he could, a strange surge of energy—something primal, something wolfish—exploded inside me. I stumbled, but instinct guided me. Reflexes sharper than ever before saved me from Kael’s blow, and for a heartbeat, I felt… unstoppable. My wolf’s growl rumbled low in my chest, a dangerous sound I barely contained. Valen’s eyes widened—not in anger, but recognition. Recognition of power, of potential, of something neither of us could yet name. The way his gaze lingered made my chest tighten with a mix of fear and something else… desire, perhaps, or acknowledgment. Kael recoiled slightly, uncertainty flashing across his face. He had never seen me like this—controlled, yet unbreakable. The test ended, the Alpha’s inspection complete. The other Gammas murmured among themselves, some in awe, some in fear. I sank to my knees, chest heaving, sweat stinging my eyes. My wolf calmed slightly, but the fire inside me would not be extinguished. I had endured the lashes, the humiliation, the mocking stares. I had obeyed, survived, and yet… something deeper had awakened. Something powerful. And as I caught Valen’s gaze one last time before he left, I realized that survival was no longer enough. One day, I would no longer kneel. One day, I would rise. And until that day… I endured.
