Chapter 19

"Sometimes fate walks toward you long before you realize it is coming." The Blackwood pack house had never been so alive with activity. Servants rushed through the halls carrying fabrics, silver trays, and polished ceremonial weapons. The scent of fresh pine and burning incense filled the air as decorations were hung along the great hall. The Alpha Ceremony was approaching. Within two days, Valen Blackwood would stand before the entire pack and claim his father’s title as the next Alpha. It was meant to be a moment of pride. A moment of power. But beneath the excitement, something else stirred quietly within the pack. Unease. Because word had spread. The Lycan Prince of Silvermoon was coming. Even the elders spoke of it in hushed voices. A Lycan royal rarely visited a werewolf territory unless the matter was important. And when they did… Entire packs trembled. Isolde moved quietly through the halls with a wooden bucket of water balanced carefully in her hands. Her ribs still ached from Kael’s punishment two days earlier, and the faint bruise along her cheek had barely begun to fade. Every step she took reminded her of the pain. But she had learned long ago to ignore it. Pain was part of her life. What unsettled her now was something else entirely. Her wolf. It had been restless all morning. Not violently. But persistently. Like a distant drum echoing inside her chest. The strange warmth beneath her skin had returned again, stronger than before. Sometimes it felt as though something inside her was listening. Waiting. Isolde paused briefly near one of the tall windows that overlooked the forest surrounding the pack territory. The trees swayed gently in the wind, their branches whispering together like voices sharing secrets. Her wolf stirred again. A strange sense of anticipation washed through her. For a moment she wondered if she was imagining it. Then footsteps approached behind her. “Still pretending you belong here?” The familiar voice sent a chill down her spine. Valen. Isolde stiffened but slowly turned to face him. He stood a few steps away, dressed in dark training clothes, his golden eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her uncomfortable. Lately he had been watching her far too often. It made her uneasy. “I’m only doing my work,” she replied quietly. Valen’s gaze moved over her face, lingering briefly on the fading bruise along her cheek. Something dark flickered behind his eyes. “Kael was too gentle with you,” he said coldly. Isolde lowered her gaze. Silence stretched between them. But Valen didn’t move away. Instead, he stepped closer. Close enough that she could smell the sharp scent of cedar and iron that clung to him. His wolf stirred restlessly. The same strange reaction that had been tormenting him for days returned again. The closer he stood to her… The stronger it became. It infuriated him. “You’ve been different lately,” he muttered. Isolde blinked slightly. “I don’t understand.” Valen studied her face carefully, searching for something he couldn’t name. There was something about her presence now. Something that hadn’t been there before. Even bruised and dressed like a servant, she carried herself differently. Stronger. It made something possessive twist inside him. Before he realized what he was doing, his hand reached out and caught her wrist. Isolde flinched. “Let go,” she whispered. Valen’s grip tightened slightly. His wolf growled in approval. “You act like you’re above us now,” he said quietly. “I’m not.” “Then prove it.” The words hung heavy between them. Fear flickered briefly in Isolde’s eyes. But it wasn’t fear of pain. It was something else. Disappointment. And that look made Valen’s temper flare. Suddenly footsteps echoed down the corridor. Cassiana appeared around the corner, her dark eyes immediately taking in the scene. Her lips curved slowly. “Well,” she said lightly. “This is interesting.” Valen released Isolde’s wrist immediately. Isolde stepped back, lowering her gaze as she moved away from them. Cassiana watched her retreating figure thoughtfully until the girl disappeared down the hallway. Only then did she look back at Valen. “You’re becoming predictable,” she said. Valen scowled. “I was only reminding her of her place.” Cassiana tilted her head slightly. “Were you?” She stepped closer, studying him carefully. “Because it looked more like you were claiming her.” Valen’s jaw tightened. “That girl is nothing.” Cassiana smiled faintly. “Yes,” she said. “That’s exactly what makes this so amusing.” She turned and began walking down the hall. “Enjoy your ceremony preparations,” she added over her shoulder. “The prince arrives tomorrow.” Valen froze. The prince. The reminder stirred a different kind of irritation inside him. Lycan royalty always complicated things. And the last thing he wanted was a powerful outsider interfering with pack matters. Especially now. Outside the pack territory, far beyond the towering pine forests, a procession of black armored riders moved silently along the mountain road. At the center of the formation rode a man whose presence alone commanded the respect of everyone around him. Prince Ariel Silvermoon. Moonlight reflected off the silver strands of his hair as the wind shifted through the mountain pass. His expression remained calm as he rode, his pale silver eyes fixed on the distant forest ahead. But inside him… His Lycan had been restless for hours. It stirred beneath his skin with a growing sense of urgency. Something was calling to him. Something powerful. Something familiar. He didn’t yet understand why. But the closer they rode toward Blackwood territory… The stronger the feeling became. His wolf growled softly inside his mind. Mate. Ariel’s grip tightened slightly on the reins of his horse. Mate? Impossible. He had traveled across countless territories in his life and had never once felt the pull of a destined bond. Yet now… The sensation was undeniable. Ancient. Irresistible. The wind shifted again, carrying the faint scent of pine forests from the valley ahead. Ariel’s eyes darkened slightly. “Interesting,” he murmured. Because somewhere within those forests… Fate was waiting for him. And neither of them knew yet how violently it would change the world around them.
