Chapter 12: Meeting the World

1005 Words
Two weeks passed after the night on Julian's balcony. Mia found herself expecting his texts by mid-morning, the easy rhythm of dinners together most nights of the week, the quiet comfort of falling asleep beside him more often than either of them acknowledged out loud anymore. The rules were still there, technically, but they'd become more like guidelines neither of them enforced too strictly, and neither of them mentioned that shift either. She was restocking the pastry case at the café on a slow Wednesday afternoon when her phone buzzed with a text from Julian. *Dinner tonight. Something to discuss.* Mia frowned slightly at her phone. Julian rarely announced discussions in advance — usually he just said what was on his mind the moment they were alone. The formality of it made her slightly uneasy as she finished her shift, wondering what "something to discuss" might mean. She found out that evening, halfway through dinner, when Julian set down his fork and looked at her with an expression she couldn't quite place. "There's a gala Friday night," he said. "Company event. Mostly boring, but I need to make an appearance." "Okay," Mia said slowly, waiting for the rest of it. "I'd like you to come with me." She set down her own fork, studying him carefully. "Julian, that breaks the rules. Multiple rules, actually. 'Not a couple, don't act like one in public' — that was one of your rules, if I remember correctly." "I know." He finally met her eyes fully, something unreadable in his expression. "I'm asking anyway." Mia's heart did something complicated in her chest, torn between the thrill of being wanted publicly and the fear of what it meant that he wanted it too. "Why now? We've kept this contained for weeks." "Because I'm tired of pretending you're just a name I can't put in my phone," Julian said quietly, the admission clearly costing him something. "I know it complicates things. I know it's not what we agreed to. But I'd like you there. If you want to come." The vulnerability underneath his usual composure struck her harder than she expected. "What would I even wear to something like that?" Something like relief flickered across his face at her question — not a no, not an argument, just practical concern. "I'll have something sent over. If that's all right." "Julian Cross, are you offering to buy me a dress?" "I'm offering to make sure you don't feel out of place at an event full of people who've never worked an honest day in their lives," he corrected, though the corner of his mouth twitched slightly. Mia laughed despite herself. "Fine. I'll come. But this doesn't mean the rules are gone." "Wouldn't dream of suggesting that," Julian said, though something in his eyes suggested he knew, as well as she did, that they'd already crossed further than either of them had planned. --- The dress that arrived Thursday afternoon was deep emerald silk, simple but clearly expensive, fitting Mia's frame like it had been made specifically for her — which, she suspected, it probably had been. Friday night, Julian's car picked her up promptly at seven, and by the time they walked into the glittering ballroom together, Mia felt the weight of dozens of curious glances settling over them, whispered questions passing between elegantly dressed guests who clearly recognized Julian and clearly did not recognize her. "Everyone's staring," Mia murmured as they moved through the crowd, Julian's hand resting lightly at the small of her back. "They're staring at you," Julian corrected, "because you're the most interesting person in this room, and they're not used to that." Despite herself, Mia felt warmth spread through her chest at the compliment. "Careful, Cross. That almost sounded like a feeling." "Don't get used to it," Julian said dryly, though his hand stayed exactly where it was. The evening unfolded in a blur of introductions, forced small talk with board members and their bored spouses, and the occasional pointed question about "how exactly" Mia and Julian knew each other — questions Julian deflected smoothly, protectively, in ways that made something in Mia's chest ache with unnamed feeling. Near the end of the night, as they stood near the balcony doors catching a rare moment alone, a woman approached — elegant, sharp-eyed, clearly someone important given the way the surrounding guests parted for her. "Julian." Her smile was polished, practiced. "I didn't realize you were bringing a date tonight." "Diane." Julian's voice cooled several degrees. "This is Mia." Diane's eyes swept over Mia with clinical assessment. "How lovely. I don't believe I've heard your name before, Mia. What do you do?" "I work at a café," Mia said evenly, refusing to shrink under the woman's obvious scrutiny. Something flickered in Diane's expression — surprise, maybe disdain, quickly masked. "How refreshing," she said, in a tone that suggested the opposite. "Julian usually prefers company more suited to his... circles." "Diane," Julian said, warning clear in his voice. "I'm only saying—" "You've said enough." Julian's voice carried an edge Mia hadn't heard from him before, protective and sharp. "Mia is exactly the company I prefer. If that's a problem for you, it's not one I care to discuss further." Diane's smile tightened, but she retreated gracefully, murmuring something about finding her husband before disappearing back into the crowd. Mia stared at Julian, something warm and terrifying blooming in her chest. "You didn't have to do that." "Yes," Julian said simply. "I did." They left shortly after, and the tension that had been building all evening — public, protective, undeniably real — followed them home, culminating in a night that felt different from every one before it. Still passionate, still an undeniable part of the arrangement they'd built weeks ago, but layered now with something neither of them could pretend was purely physical anymore. Afterward, lying tangled together in the dark, Julian's voice broke the silence, quiet and uncertain in a way Mia had never heard from him.
