A sliver of the sun on the horizon was all that was left of the retreating day as Derek locked the door and left the post office. With a glance toward the empty house awaiting his return, he shook his head and walked in the opposite direction. He had no reason not to go home, but he was oddly restless and going home would only make it worse. Instead, he decided to take the long way home, maybe stop in somewhere for dinner along the way, in the hope that by the time he reached the house he could either figure out why he was so restless or have exhausted it. Either would be a win. His took off down the side of the highway, wishing not for the first time that the little town had a few more sidewalks. It wasn’t bad now, but the summer rains would start soon, at least they all hoped they would
