Laurelynn sat silently in the passenger’s seat of the SUV as Neil drove them out of town and beyond. Neil talked, he raged about how the council had wronged him. How he was going to get everything back. He would show them who was the better man and who deserved what. She tuned him out long before they got to the turn off to the ranch that they sped past without even slowing.
She couldn’t help the wave of relief that washed through her as he never even commented on the ranch, or the twins, as they passed the road. She wondered if he knew what the narrow road was. Had he really meant what he’d said about taking all of them or had he said it just to get her to go with him? She had no way of knowing, but decided she’d rather be wrong than put them in danger.
