## Chapter Ten — Ethan's Choice
She called Jake from the parking lot before she went inside.
He answered fast — the way he had been answering since October, like he kept his phone in his hand specifically for her calls.
"Tell me," she said.
"My father flew to Austin this morning," Jake said. "He never comes to Austin. He has not been here in two years. He went directly to Ethan's place and they were in there for three hours." A pause. "When my father left he looked satisfied. That is not a look I see on him often and it is never a good sign."
"Do you know what they discussed?"
"Not specifically. But I know my father well enough to read the satisfaction." Jake's voice was careful. "He got something from Ethan. Something he came for specifically."
