## Chapter Twenty-Seven — The Wire
Agent Vance called Patricia on Thursday morning with a request.
Not a demand — a request. Vance was careful about that distinction, which Mia had noticed from the first description of her and which she had come to trust as a reliable signal about a person's operating method. She made requests. She explained reasoning. She did not use leverage she had not earned.
The request was for Mia to wear a wire to the Sloane meeting.
Mia had already agreed before Patricia called to explain it.
"I assumed," she said.
Patricia was quiet for a moment. "Most people don't assume that."
"Most people haven't spent four months documenting everything they could get on tape," Mia said. "I understand the value of the recording."
