Chapter 7 – Trust Test

732 Words
The Sterling Enterprises office was unusually quiet that morning. Lila Monroe felt a strange unease as she walked down the hallway, clutching her notebook tightly. Every step felt heavier than the last, as if the building itself were aware of the storm about to hit. She hadn’t slept well. Vivienne’s looming presence at the gala, the cryptic messages, and the constant pressure of proving herself to Ethan had left her restless. And now… she had a feeling that today would be different. *************** As she reached her workstation, Lila noticed the first red flag: a folder on her desk she didn’t remember seeing before. Her name was scrawled on it in neat, precise handwriting. Who left this? she wondered, heart thudding. She opened it and immediately felt a chill. Inside were documents, charts, and emails designed to make her look incompetent: errors highlighted, deadlines she supposedly missed, and suggestions that she had mismanaged a recent company project. This must be Vivienne, Lila thought, fury mixing with fear. She’s trying to sabotage me… before anyone even notices. ************* Lila knew she couldn’t confront the situation alone. She took a deep breath and went straight to Ethan’s office. He was reviewing reports, eyes scanning pages with his usual intensity. “Mr. Sterling,” she began, voice steady despite her racing heart. “There’s a problem. Someone’s trying to frame me for mistakes I didn’t make.” Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Show me.” She handed him the folder. He flipped through the pages, his expression unreadable. Then, for the first time, Lila saw a flicker of something in his eyes—concern, but also… approval. “She’s bold,” he said quietly. “And reckless. But clever. Very clever. I assume you have a suspicion who’s behind this?” “Vivienne,” Lila replied. “I think she’s trying to get me fired—or worse.” Ethan leaned back, steepling his fingers. “Then we test her. We see how far she’s willing to go. You’ll need to be careful, Ms. Monroe. And watch who you trust.” ************ The next few hours were a test of Lila’s resolve. She double-checked every report, cross-referenced emails, and meticulously documented every irregularity. Ethan occasionally hovered, observing her with a keen eye, offering subtle guidance but never taking over. Every glance from him made her pulse quicken. She couldn’t deny the tension building between them—the kind that made her stomach twist in ways she didn’t fully understand. And then, during a crucial meeting with the board, Vivienne made her move. “Ms. Monroe,” Vivienne said sweetly, her tone laced with poison. “I just wanted to make sure you understood the implications of these reports. Misreading them could be… catastrophic.” Lila felt the room’s eyes on her, waiting for her to falter. But she stood her ground. “I’ve reviewed everything carefully. There are discrepancies in the reports that suggest… someone is trying to manipulate the data.” Vivienne’s eyes widened slightly—just enough to betray her surprise—before returning to her composed mask. “Oh? And who do you think that is?” Lila met her gaze steadily. “I believe you know exactly who’s behind this.” The room went silent. Vivienne’s lips curved into a faint, dangerous smile. “Bold of you to say that in front of everyone. But I suppose… you have courage.” Ethan, who had been observing silently, finally spoke. “Courage is only useful when backed by intelligence. And Ms. Monroe, you have both. That is why you’re still here.” ************* Later, in the quiet of Ethan’s office, Lila’s adrenaline began to fade, replaced by exhaustion. She sank into the chair across from him, feeling both relief and trepidation. “You did well today,” Ethan said quietly. His gaze softened, though just slightly. “Vivienne will escalate. Expect more challenges. But if you continue like this… you’ll survive.” Lila exhaled, heart racing not just from the confrontation, but from the closeness of Ethan’s presence. She didn’t know why she felt drawn to him, why the intensity between them made her pulse quicken, but she couldn’t deny it. Her phone buzzed again. Another anonymous message: “The game is only beginning. Trust no one. Not even him.” Lila’s stomach twisted. Could she trust Ethan? Could she even trust herself?
