The next morning, Lila’s nerves were a tangle of excitement and dread. She woke before sunrise, unable to sleep after the whirlwind of yesterday. Her reflection in the mirror looked pale and anxious, hair tousled from tossing and turning.
“Deep breaths, Lila,” she muttered to herself, tugging at the hem of her blouse. “You can do this.”
And yet, deep down, she doubted it.
The drive to Sterling Enterprises felt longer than ever. The streets were still quiet, but in her mind, alarms were blaring. What if I embarrass myself? What if he hates me on sight?
By the time she arrived at the towering skyscraper, her stomach had settled somewhere near her throat. She stepped inside, trying to summon confidence, only to be met with the familiar gleaming lobby. The receptionist barely looked up, as if she had seen hundreds of people like Lila walk in and out.
“Ms. Monroe?” a voice called from behind.
Lila spun around. Ethan Sterling stood there, impeccably dressed, expression unreadable. He held a folder in one hand, his other hand casually in his pocket. He looked every bit the billionaire she had imagined—and more intimidating.
“Good morning,” she said, her voice a little shaky.
He didn’t smile. “Follow me.”

The office was sleek, minimalist, and intimidating. Glass walls framed the room, giving it a panoramic view of the city. Lila felt small in the enormous space, her heart pounding like a drum.
Ethan gestured toward a chair. “Sit. Quickly.”
She obeyed, trying not to fidget. She noticed the folder in his hands, and her curiosity flared. “Is that… paperwork?” she asked.
“Yes.” He dropped the folder on the desk. “These are the documents outlining your responsibilities and the structure of Sterling Enterprises. I suggest you read them carefully… if you want to survive here.”
She opened the folder, scanning through pages filled with charts, corporate terms, and financial statements. Her head spun. This is… a lot.
“You understand all of this?” he asked, watching her closely.
“I… I think so,” she said, trying to hide her growing panic. “I’ll learn fast. I promise.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Promises don’t matter here. Results do.”
Lila swallowed hard. She wanted to argue, to prove herself, but something in his gaze made her hesitate. She nodded instead.

The tension between them was palpable, and then the door opened. Vivienne Blackwood stepped in, her presence sharp and deliberate. She wore a sleek red dress, and her smile was pointed, almost predatory.
“Good morning, Lila,” Vivienne purred. “I see you’ve met Ethan. Exciting, isn’t it?”
Lila stiffened. So, she’s really here… and she’s watching me.
Vivienne’s gaze lingered on Lila with a challenge that made her stomach twist. “I hope you’re prepared to play the game. People like us… we don’t forgive mistakes easily.”
Ethan’s expression remained cold, but Lila caught a flicker of amusement in his eyes. Does he even like her? Or is he just used to people like her falling apart?
Vivienne’s smirk didn’t waver. “Shall I leave you to it?” she asked sweetly, though the venom in her tone was obvious.
“Please,” Ethan said, voice low. “I have work to do.”
Vivienne glided out, leaving Lila alone with him.
****************
Lila took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “So… I’m assuming I’ll have some sort of training?” she asked, hoping to sound confident.
“Training?” Ethan’s dark eyes sharpened. “You’ll be thrown into the deep end. The sooner you figure things out, the better. You have until the end of this week to show me you belong—or you leave.”
Lila’s chest tightened. A week? Her mind raced: I don’t even know the first thing about corporate finance… I’m going to fail…
Ethan seemed to sense her fear, though he didn’t comment. Instead, he leaned forward slightly, voice low and controlled. “Do not underestimate this world, Ms. Monroe. One wrong step, and your fortune becomes meaningless. You’ll have allies… and enemies. But mostly enemies.”
She swallowed hard, trying not to panic. “I… I’ll be careful,” she whispered.
“Good.” He leaned back, his expression unreadable again. “But careful isn’t enough here. You need sharpness, cunning, and courage. Do you have any of that?”
She wanted to answer confidently, but the truth was, she wasn’t sure. Yet, something inside her stirred—a spark she hadn’t felt in years. “I’ll find it,” she said firmly.
Ethan’s gaze lingered on her longer than she expected. For a brief moment, it softened, almost imperceptibly, before returning to its icy intensity.
*************
The next hours were a whirlwind. Lila was introduced to the company’s hierarchy, the main projects, and her first task: review a critical report on a pending merger. Vivienne’s shadow seemed to loom everywhere, her presence implied even when she wasn’t there. Every glance felt like judgment, every smile like a trap.
By the time the day ended, Lila’s head ached, and her confidence wavered. She knew she was stepping into a battlefield she didn’t fully understand. And yet… part of her couldn’t help but feel exhilarated.
When she finally exited the office, the city lights had begun to twinkle. She paused on the sidewalk, staring up at the skyscraper where Ethan Sterling’s empire stretched high into the sky. This is it, she thought. This is my life now. And I can’t fail.
But as she walked home, her phone buzzed with an anonymous message:
“You’re in deeper than you know. Watch your back.”
