Chapter 5: The air in the tavern was thick with tension, as if the entire room had drawn in a collective breath, waiting for Olivia’s response. She stood frozen, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. The weight of Grant’s proposal, the very idea of marrying him after everything they’d been through, settled over her like a suffocating fog. Grant’s eyes were steady on her, his expression unreadable, though the faintest flicker of something, hope, desperation, played at the edges of his gaze. He knew how hard it was for her, how impossible it must seem, but the reality of the situation was undeniable. Their families, their packs, were spiraling toward disaster, and they were the only ones who could prevent it. Finally, she tore her gaze away from him, unable to bear the intensity of his stare. She took a slow, deliberate step back, her mind working furiously to process the words he had just spoken. Marrying him? Was this truly the only way out? The thought made her stomach churn. “I’m not doing this, Grant,” she said, her voice steady but laced with frustration. “You can’t expect me to just... marry you. Not after everything. Not after how we’ve been torn apart by our families.” Grant didn’t flinch. He didn’t look away. He leaned forward slightly, his tone soft but unyielding. “Olivia, I know you don’t want this. Believe me, I don’t either. But there’s no other choice.” She shook her head, the words feeling like a punch to the gut. “I don’t believe you. You’re not asking me to marry you out of some noble cause. You’re asking me because it benefits you. You want to save your pack. You don’t care about me or what I want.” His expression hardened. “You think this is easy for me? You think I’m doing this because it’s convenient for me? No, Olivia. I’m doing this because I have no other options. Our packs are on the brink of collapse. I’ve spent years trying to find a way to fix this, but nothing has worked. Our only chance is for our families to unite, and the only way to do that is for you and me to marry.” The words stung, the truth of them hitting her like a slap to the face. She had known, on some level, that this was what it would come down to. The question was never whether they loved each other, it was whether they could put aside their differences and work together for the sake of their people. Her heart wrenched as the memory of their lost love resurfaced, but she quickly pushed it aside. Now was not the time to get lost in the past. “I can’t just forget what happened,” she said, her voice breaking slightly. “I can’t pretend like it’s all going to be okay because we sign some piece of paper. You’re asking me to erase everything, to erase who I am, what I’ve become. And I won’t do it.” Grant exhaled sharply, rubbing his hand across his jaw in frustration. “I don’t expect you to forget. I don’t expect you to forgive. But this isn’t about us. This is about our people. Our packs. The war between our families has been tearing us apart for years. If we don’t do something, if we don’t act now, both our packs will be destroyed. You know that.” Olivia’s throat tightened at his words. The reality of it, the weight of what was at stake, hit her with full force. Her pack, her family, was teetering on the edge of annihilation, and the only way to save them was through an alliance with the very man she had once loved, a man who was as much her enemy as he was her past. She swallowed hard, struggling to maintain her composure. “And what do you want from me, exactly? What’s your plan?” Grant’s lips tightened, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. It was fleeting, but it was there, and it made her wonder if he truly understood the magnitude of what he was asking. “I want you to marry me, Olivia. I want us to unite our families, to end the feud once and for all. The politics of our world are fragile. If we don’t act, there will be no future for either of us.” Her heart pounded in her chest, the conflict tearing at her. She knew he was right. The world they lived in, one of power, politics, and endless war, didn’t leave room for sentimental feelings or personal desires. It was cold, brutal, and unforgiving. And yet, the thought of marrying Grant, of taking that final step toward unification, felt like a betrayal of everything she had fought for. “Marrying you won’t fix everything,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “It won’t undo the years of hatred between our families. It won’t erase the bloodshed.” “No,” Grant agreed, his voice low and rough. “But it will stop it. And that’s all we have left, one chance to stop the war before it consumes everything.” Olivia stared at him, her chest tight with emotion. The man sitting before her was no longer the boy she had once known, the boy who had held her in his arms and promised her the world. He was someone else now, someone hardened by war and responsibility, someone who had learned the hard way that the world didn’t care about love. “And what happens if I say no?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. Grant’s eyes hardened, and for a moment, there was a coldness to him that she hadn’t expected. “Then we all lose. You’ll lose your pack. I’ll lose mine. And the war will continue until there’s nothing left to fight for.” The silence that followed was heavy, pregnant with the weight of the decision she had to make. Her mind raced, her emotions a tangled mess of fear, anger, and longing. She had always known that her family’s survival would come at a cost, but she had never imagined it would come to this. She stared at Grant, his expression unwavering, waiting for her to make her choice. His eyes, dark and intense, seemed to bore into her soul, urging her to choose the path that would save them all. “Do you love me?” she asked before she could stop herself. Grant blinked, his gaze softening, but only for a moment. “I don’t know, Olivia. I don’t know if I ever stopped loving you. But love doesn’t matter now. Duty does.” Her heart broke at the finality in his words, the harsh truth that had always defined their relationship. And yet, despite everything, despite all the pain, she knew she had no choice but to do what he was asking. For the sake of her pack. For the sake of peace. She took a deep breath, her decision made. “I’ll do it,” she said, her voice steady. Grant’s gaze softened, and for the briefest moment, she saw the flicker of something in his eyes, a flicker of the boy she had once loved.
