We barely managed to advance a few meters before they tried to stop us. “Jason!” Jamison's voice echoed through the narrow hallways, but Jason didn't slow down, and with his hand like iron on my wrist, neither did I. I barely had time to turn around and see that the Beta was a few feet behind us, but with its long strides that distance decreased dramatically with every second. At the double doors of the office, the Alpha Rogers glared at us with barely contained fury. What the hell is happening? "Come on, hurry up!" Jason tugged at my wrist, bringing me back to reality. I turned my head and quickened my pace to follow him even though I didn't understand why we should be running. "Jason" I try to talk to him without slowing down. Despite having no idea what the danger was, his terror is something that if I understand and if Jason wants me to run, then I'm going to run. "He's crazy," He mutters as we reach the stairs, our bodies bumping against the rough, cold stone wall with the sharp turn. He climbs them nimbly, with eight hours of training a day, a few stairs are nothing, but the Delta do not receive training, we are only to be the b*****e and in a few seconds I am out of breath and the side of my body begins to burn in painful stitches as I clumsily jump the steps trying not to trip. "Why?" I asked breathlessly and each word made the stitches increase. My body was screaming for me to stop, but I couldn't. I had a feeling that if I did, Jason would drag me down. He was beyond all reasoning, his face seemed lost in madness, escaping from a danger that I could not see. Behind us I could still hear Jamison running at top speed, trying to call Jason to no avail. Luckily the stairs in this section were deserted and, other than Jamison, there was no one to witness this scene. No, the problem would be later because if I was not mistaken, Jason led us up the side stairs to reach the entrance of the Institute, the one that connects with the garden and beyond, with the forest. That part of the building was always packed with Wolves running around, busy with their daily routines and if Jason wanted to pass by he would have to meet a lot of curious glances. It would mean nothing to him. But I still remember the Alpha's furious face when Jason fled and I was sure that, as always, whatever trouble the two of us got into, the consequences would be borne by me alone. Jason for the part of him continued in his world, dragging me from step to step, muttering so low that he doubted he expected me to hear him. "He's a coward." He mumbled angrily. "I told him thousands of times that he shouldn't make that deal. That he was crazy, but the i***t ignored him. He believed himself invincible. Now everything exploded in his face and he is going to make you pay!" "Me ?!" I asked incredulously.  Nothing Jason said made sense. What deal is he talking about? What does it mean that Alpha Rogers blew up in his face? And why, of all things, should I be the one to pay for that? What did I, a simple ignored Delta, have to do with Alpha matters?  "Jason, what you say makes no sense" I tried to detach myself from his hand, to make us stop, but his grip became so strong that I felt like my bones rattled and I held back a cry of pain. "I'm not going to let him do this," Jason repeated like crazy. I see light ahead and I realize that we are, in fact, about to reach the ground floor as I believed, the busiest in the building. Got damn. "When he called me to talk about you," Jason continued completely ignorant to my despair. "I thought I had finally brought him to his senses," he shook his head, incredulous at his hope. I watched with terror as we were just a few steps from the entrance to the building, where everyone could see us  "I thought he was finally going to approve that I have chosen you as Mate and then you go and give me this news?" I'm pretty sure Jason hasn't realized that he said those words out loud, he's so lost in his flight that it seems like he forgot I'm there but still his words leave me cold. Jason ... had he asked his father that I will be his Mate? Just thinking about it seemed impossible. Jason? The same one that he had never seen me as anything more than his family, the same one that I had loved since he was six years old? It was impossible ... but she couldn't deny that that was exactly what he had said. We reached the entrance of the building and the moment we touched the polished and cold stone floor, more than one face turned towards us and towards our joined hands but I no longer had the strength to care. The exhaustion, confusion, and stupid hope that arose in me had left me stunned and I couldn't help but put one foot in front of the other as Jason continued to drag me. I had no idea where I was planning to go, and I still didn't understand why we were running but my mind could no longer process what was happening. Jason wanted to choose me as his Mate. More than one person stopped to look at us but I hardly paid attention to them, I hardly recognized them. I only had a second to see Candace open-mouthed and her eyes wide, staring after us before we disappeared behind a stone pillar. I hear screams and laughter and hundreds of sounds that I cannot identify but they all pass through me and I soon forget them. Jason is leading me towards the Forest, I see the entrance that we always take a hundred meters from where we are, the imposing trees indifferent to our haste. But before we can even get out of the main garden, strong hands grab my shoulders and the next thing I know I'm knocked to the ground and Jason is no longer holding my hand. As soon as I realize my face is against the freshly cut grass, someone takes my hand and stands me up, forcefully but not ungraciously, and I lift my head to see that Jamison is trying to shake the grass off of me and the dry leaves that have stuck to my sweater. “Let her go!” Jason yells, throwing himself at him but before he can even reach him, a Beta from the Alpha's guard takes Jason by the arm. Immediately another comes and between the two, Jason jerks and twists but has no way of letting go. "Careful guys," Jamison tells them in a stern voice. "He is the son of the Alpha." I look around and realize that we are the only ones in the garden, the entrances are guarded, all by guards from Alpha's service and it seems they have evacuated the place. But why? Before I can come to an answer I feel a hand forcibly resting on my shoulder, it is Beta Stevens part of the Alpha guard and a very grumpy Wolf in his best days. Sadist at his worst. Behind him is Alpha Rogers whose yellow eyes are fixed on his son. "You're a fool," he snaps at Jason and he is dedicated to giving him a look of hatred. "What did you think they were going to do? Escape? In my territory?" He throws a bitter laugh that makes my blood run cold, I've never seen the Alpha like this. He can be calculating and in more than one action, reprehensible, but he has always treated his son well. "You should know, boy, there is no way to escape this" His voice is tinged with bitterness, and it occurs to me that whatever is happening, it is something that the Alpha does not want either, but that he has had to resign himself to it. The Alpha gestures to the guards holding his son. "Take him to his room and lock him up, I don't want him to be causing trouble until this is over" "You can't do it!" Jason shouted desperately as they dragged him. I watch the scene motionless, Beta Stevens's hand freezing me in place but my heart pounding against my chest. I can't help but fear that they will hurt him, even though the guards are careful when they take him away and that the damage that Jason may have will be due to his resistance, I fear that something will happen to him when he is away from my view. I have never seen the Alpha so furious with his son. "He will kill her!" Jason yells desperately  "You know it! That bastard is going to kill her!" Scared, I can't help but watch as the guards carry Jason into the building, where his screams can still be heard. Suddenly, a broad chest blocks my vision and with my heart in my throat, I force my gaze up to the Alpha, whose yellow eyes are staring at me coldly. "You will come with us, Kristal. There is something you should know"
