Fear gripped him as he stopped sharply. The guilt of earlier resurfaced for a split second. Jace froze mid-step. The voice calling out to him sounded too familiar, sounded a lot like hers. His body tensed, and for a moment, the guilt he had been suppressing all day threatened to break out again. A cold shiver ran down his spine as he thought of what he would say to her. “I thought you had left?” he finally asked. His body remained still. He spoke without turning around; his words came out barely above a whisper. His whole demeanor seemed so strained. There was a short pause before the voice answered.
