Forever seen

339 Words
The gym was filled with the sound of camera shutters, applause, and the rustle of graduation gowns. Ava stood in line, clutching her cap, heart racing faster than it ever had. Just a year ago, she couldn’t even walk these halls without her hood pulled tight. Now, her face was uncovered — soft, scarred, and strong. Her name was called. “Ava Reynolds.” She took a breath and stepped forward. The lights were bright, but she didn’t flinch. Not this time. The crowd clapped — and somewhere in the noise, she heard Eli’s voice shout her name. It wasn’t just pride. It was love, real and loud. She smiled — truly smiled — as she took her diploma. After the ceremony, the sky was streaked with orange and pink, the kind of sunset that felt like an ending and a beginning at once. Eli found her near the bleachers, his cap in one hand, his grin crooked as ever. “Graduate Reynolds,” he said with mock seriousness, “how does it feel to be officially done?” Ava laughed. “Like I can finally breathe.” He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’ve come a long way.” “So have you,” she said softly. They stood there, the world moving slowly around them, fireworks starting somewhere in the distance. Eli took her hand, eyes warm and steady. “You know, I never loved you because I couldn’t see your face.” “I know,” she whispered. “You loved me because you could see my heart.” He smiled, leaning closer until their foreheads touched,he kissed her passionately, “And now,” he murmured, “I see both.” Later that night, Ava sat by her window, looking out at the stars. No hood. No shadows. Just her — Ava Reynolds — whole, brave, and loved. In the faint glass reflection, she saw herself smiling. For the first time in forever, she didn’t feel faceless. She felt seen.
