The train ride back to Willow Creek felt slower than it should have. Each passing town blurred into fields and sunlight, and Ava watched them drift by with her sketchbook in her lap. For the first time, her drawings weren’t sad. They were alive — full of faces and light, each one a piece of her she’d found again. When the announcement came — “Next stop, Willow Creek” — her hands trembled. Coming home felt different now. Not like going backward, but like coming full circle. --- The town hadn’t changed much, but she had. Her hoodie stayed in her suitcase. She walked with her head up, scars and all, letting the breeze brush her face. Her first stop wasn’t home. It was the art gallery downtown — the same one she’d wandered through once, years ago, before everything fell apart. Inside, the light was soft and golden, spilling across the polished floors. The gallery smelled of paint and hope. Her artwork was already there — hung carefully by the curator who’d seen her pieces online and reached out weeks ago. One painting in particular drew a small crowd: A faceless girl standing in sunlight, surrounded by color. Ava’s name sat neatly below it: > Ava Reynolds – “Becoming” She took a slow breath, letting it all sink in. Every sleepless night, every scar, every fear — it had all led here. “Ava?” She turned at the sound of his voice. Eli stood at the entrance, a camera hanging from his neck, wearing that same crooked smile that made her heart ache and heal all at once. “I didn’t think you’d come,” she whispered. He walked closer. “You really thought I’d miss this?” When he reached her, they just looked at each other for a moment — no rush, no words, just understanding. He looked at the painting behind her. “That’s the girl I met,” he said softly. “No,” Ava said, smiling faintly. “That’s the girl I finally met too.” He reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You look happy.” “I am.” “Then I’m exactly where I should be,” he said.
