Chapter 1

665 Words
Mom and Dad seemed to remember the promises they had made before bringing me home. They lowered their hands awkwardly. "Mia, let's check the footage first. If Evelyn really did push you, she'll answer for it under pack law." Mia Blackwood's sobs stopped dead. "Cameras? You installed new cameras in the house?" I nodded and pointed to the camera facing the foot of the stairs. "I had Mom and Dad install it when I came home." Mia clearly hadn't known about the camera, or she never would have thrown herself down the stairs. "Mom, Dad, I can't believe you trust me so little. It hurts... It hurts so much. I think I'm dying..." Clutching her bruised ankle, Mia burst into pitiful sobs. Mom immediately started crying. Dad scooped Mia into his arms. "We need to get her to the pack hospital!" I watched them fuss over her before asking quietly, "Mom, Dad, are we still going to check the footage?" Mom said nothing. Dad spun around and glared at me. "Evelyn Blackwood, do you have any compassion at all? Your sister is hurt, and you're still going on about that footage?" Mom wiped at her tears. "Exactly, Evelyn. Whether Mia fell on her own or you pushed her, she's hurt now. You should be worried about her. She's your sister." I couldn't understand why I was supposed to worry about someone who had just tried to frame me. Besides, falling down three steps was hardly going to kill her. I watched Mom and Dad rush out with Mia, slamming the door behind them, then sat down on the stairs and replayed the security footage. When I found the moment Mia deliberately threw herself down the stairs, I screen-recorded it and saved the clip. Not long after, my brother, Adrian Blackwood, came in carrying a bag of barbecue takeout. "Mia, look what I brought you!" he called. When no one answered, he looked around and turned to the housekeeper. "Where's my sister?" The housekeeper pointed toward me. "Mr. Blackwood, there she is, your biological sister." Adrian barely spared me a glance. "Mia is my only sister. Don't make that mistake again." His expression tightened. "Where is she? Did something happen?" After he pressed her for an answer, the housekeeper finally told him what had happened. "What? Mia fell down the stairs?" He immediately turned on me. "Did you do it?" Without arguing, I pulled up the security footage and held out my phone. "Mia Blackwood threw herself down the stairs and tried to frame me." Adrian didn't even look. He slapped the phone out of my hand. "Enough! If you hadn't come back, Mia wouldn't be so insecure and scared all the time. Falling down those stairs must have hurt like hell..." His eyes reddened as he shot me a hateful look, then ordered his driver to take him to the pack hospital. My phone lay on the floor, its cracked screen frozen on the exact moment Mia had thrown herself down the stairs. The evidence had been right in front of him, and my brother hadn't even bothered to look. The housekeeper tried to comfort me, reminding me that Adrian and Mia had grown up together and telling me not to take his reaction too hard. I picked up my phone and shook my head. I'd imagined this scene long before it happened. Somehow, expecting the worst made it hurt a little less when it finally came true. That evening, I stood by the window and watched Dad carry Mia home on his back while Mom and Adrian fussed over her every step of the way. Mia happened to look up and catch my eye. A smug smile spread across her face. "Mom, Dad, Adrian," she called, "you promised I'm the one you love most." Mom and Dad answered without hesitation. "Of course you are. Don't ever do this again. Evelyn may be back now, but that will never change how much we love you."
