Chapter 3

Adrian looked at me with open disgust before pulling Mia into his arms and soothing her. The rest of the class immediately followed his lead. "Do you actually believe anything Evelyn just said?" "Maybe she's not just a thief. Maybe she's a liar too." "Exactly. If Evelyn were really Adrian's biological sister, why would he slap her?" Seeing everyone turn against me, Mia spoke up. "Evelyn... I know you hate me, but Lillian's wolf-fang pendant proves her right to inherit her pack. We have to get to the bottom of this." "It proves her right to inherit?" I asked, surprised. Lillian glared at me. "Yes! It's worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the fang belonged to my family's first Alpha. Give it back now, or I'm searching your bag!" I pulled out my phone and called the Moonlight Council's enforcement hotline. "Officer, one of my classmates is missing an ancestral wolf-fang pendant that's been passed down in her family for generations. Yes, we're in Grade 10, Class A at Mooncrest Academy." The call lasted less than 30 seconds. Mia's eyes widened. "Why did you call the authorities?" "An important family heirloom is missing. Why wouldn't I?" I looked around at them. "Unless one of you actually saw me steal it. Is that why you're so sure you have the right to search my bag?" Officers from the Moonlight Council soon arrived, along with my parents and Lillian's. Lillian's father looked furious. "The family only entrusted that heirloom to you at your full-moon ceremony. How could you lose it?" Lillian glanced at Mia. Unwilling to betray her friend, she insisted that I had stolen it. I opened my notebook, checked off the item about being framed for theft, then looked at Mom. "Mom, didn't you say none of the terrible things I predicted would actually happen?" Mom hesitated, then placed both hands on my shoulders. "That's right. My daughter can have anything she wants. She has no reason to steal another family's heirloom." Her hands were warm. I lowered my head and blinked hard against the sudden sting in my eyes. So this was what it felt like to have my family believe me. At Lillian's insistence, the officers searched my bag anyway. They found the ancestral wolf-fang pendant hidden inside a secret compartment. The classroom erupted in whispers. Dad spun around and slapped me across the face. His blow was far harder than Adrian's. My ears rang from the impact. Pointing a trembling finger at the pendant, Dad demanded, "You said you didn't steal it. Then what is this?" Adrian sneered. "Evelyn Blackwood, haven't you gotten rid of those filthy habits you picked up out there yet?" Mom stared at me, hurt and disbelief written all over her face. "Evelyn... did you take it?" Her suspicion hurt more than Dad's slap. One of the officers examined the scent traces on the fang and frowned. "Evelyn's scent isn't on it. We can't accuse her based on this alone." Mia immediately reached into my schoolbag and pulled out a pair of hunting gloves. "These gloves block a person's scent. She must have planned this in advance!" Every eye in the room turned on me, filled with contempt. I didn't bother explaining. Instead, I removed the moonstone barrette from my hair and handed it to one of the officers. "There's a miniature camera hidden inside this. Check the recording." The footage showed that I hadn't gone anywhere near Lillian's desk all day. Lillian, on the other hand, had worn the ancestral wolf fang around her neck and deliberately shown it off in front of me several times. Later, when I went to the restroom, I'd taken off the barrette and left it inside my pencil case. The screen went dark. Then two voices came through clearly. "Will this really work? Will everyone believe she stole my family's wolf fang?" "Of course. Once Evelyn gets caught stealing your family's heirloom, everyone will think she's a thief who's after the packs' wealth and status. Then they'll all turn against her." "But that fang belonged to my family's first Alpha. If I don't get it back, my father will kill me." "Relax. Once the officers find it in her bag, they'll give it back to you, won't they?" The hidden camera had recorded every word of Mia and Lillian's conversation. Both girls went pale. Lillian's mother grabbed her by the ear, dragged her over, and forced her to apologize to me. Mia, meanwhile, hid in Adrian's arms, trembling. Mom raised her hand to slap Mia, horrified by what she'd heard, but Adrian stepped in front of her. "Mom, if you have to hit someone, hit me!" Tears streamed down Mom's face as her hand fell weakly to her side. "Mia, why would you do this to your sister? She's my daughter. My own flesh and blood!" Sobbing, Mia claimed she'd lost control for a moment and swore she'd never do it again. And just like that, it was over. At least for everyone else. The swollen handprint on my face made the whole thing feel like a cruel joke. Dad approached me awkwardly and reached out as if to pull me into a hug. I stepped back. My gaze swept over all of them before I said coldly, "I want to transfer to another class."
