The two-day break didn’t feel like rest.
It felt like something waiting.
Janessa tried to ignore it.
The noise. The memory of the port. The uneasy feeling that things weren’t as simple as they used to be.
By the second day, she gave up trying to stay inside.
The cafe was quiet, tucked just far enough from campus to feel separate.
Warm lights. Low music. The kind of place where nothing serious ever seemed to happen.
Janessa ordered her drink and stepped aside, scrolling through her phone absentmindedly.
“Vanilla iced latte?”
She moved forward but someone else reached at the same time.
Their hands brushed.
“Oh...sorry,” the guy said quickly, pulling back. “I think that’s yours.”
Janessa glanced at the cup, then at him. “Did you order the same thing?”
He checked his receipt and laughed. “Either that or I just accidentally stole your order.”
She smiled. “It’s mine.”
“Good,” he said, handing it over. “I didn’t want to start our first meeting as a criminal.”
She raised an eyebrow slightly. “First meeting?”
He paused, then smiled. “I’m Daniel.”
“Janessa.”
“Nice to meet you.”
There was something easy about him.
No pressure. No edge.
Just… normal.
“Mind if I sit?” he asked, nodding toward her table. “Everything else is kind of taken.”
Janessa glanced around briefly.
Then nodded. “Sure.”
Conversation came naturally.
Too naturally.
They talked about school, stress, random things that didn’t matter but somehow made everything feel lighter.
Daniel was… nice.
Not in a fake way.
In a way that made it easy to forget everything else.
“You seem like you’ve had a long week,” he said at one point.
Janessa exhaled softly. “You could say that.”
“Well,” he said, leaning back, “you don’t look like someone who lets things get to them.”
She gave a small smile. “You don’t even know me.”
“True,” he said. “But I’m usually right about people.”
She shook her head, amused. “Confident.”
“Always.”
She laughed.
And for a moment, everything felt normal again.
Two days later, classes resumed.
Janessa walked into the lecture hall, adjusting her bag
And stopped.
Daniel.
He was sitting a few rows ahead, looking around like he didn’t quite believe he was there.
He turned.
Saw her.
And smiled instantly.
“You....?”
“You go here?” they both said at the same time.
They laughed.
“I just transferred,” Daniel said, standing up. “I didn’t know this was the school until yesterday.”
Janessa shook her head. “That’s actually crazy.”
“Guess I got lucky.”
He moved his bag. “Sit?”
She nodded, smiling, and took the seat beside him.
A few minutes later, Enzo walked in.
His eyes moved across the room out of habit, then stopped.
Janessa.
Sitting next to someone.
Laughing.
Something in his expression shifted, but only slightly.
Then he looked at the guy beside her.
And froze.
For just a second.
Daniel met his gaze.
And smiled.
Not a wide smile.
Not obvious.
But enough.
Enzo walked over.
Janessa looked up. “Hey.”
Then she glanced between them. “Wait...do you guys know each other?”
Daniel stood up casually.
“Yeah,” he said easily. “It’s been a while.”
Enzo’s expression smoothed out almost instantly.
“Yeah,” he added, just as calm. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”
Janessa blinked. “Wait, seriously? That’s such a coincidence.”
Daniel laughed lightly. “Small world.”
Enzo nodded once. “Very small.”
There was a brief pause, but nothing uncomfortable.
At least, not to her.
“So how do you guys know each other?” Janessa asked.
Daniel glanced at Enzo for half a second.
Then answered smoothly, “We’ve crossed paths before.”
Enzo added, “A while ago.”
Janessa nodded. “That’s actually kind of cool.”
Daniel smiled. “Yeah. Didn’t think I’d run into him again like this.”
“Same,” Enzo said.
Their eyes met briefly.
Something unspoken passed between them.
But it was gone just as quickly.
Janessa didn’t notice.
“Guess this works out,” Daniel said, sitting back down. “Now I already know someone here.”
“You know two people,” Janessa corrected.
“Even better.”
Enzo pulled out a chair and sat beside them.
To anyone watching, it looked normal.
Three students.
A casual conversation.
Nothing unusual.
But under the surface,
Every word was careful.
Every glance measured.
“You settling in okay?” Enzo asked Daniel.
“Yeah,” Daniel replied. “Better now.”
A slight pause.
“Good,” Enzo said.
Janessa smiled faintly. “See? You guys are already catching up.”
Daniel chuckled. “Yeah… something like that.”
As the lecture started, Janessa focused on her notes.
Next to her, Daniel leaned back slightly, relaxed.
On her other side, Enzo sat still, eyes forward.
Neither of them spoke again.
But once,
Just once.
Daniel tapped his pen lightly against the desk.
A quiet rhythm.
Enzo’s fingers tightened slightly around his own.
No one else noticed.
Especially not Janessa.
