~~ Chapter Fourteen ~~

778 Words
Days turned into weeks and weeks turn into months. Soon, it was time for the first semester exam of the freshmen students. The library was quieter than usual. Not silent, but calm in a way that made everything feel slower. Pages turning, keyboards clicking, the occasional whisper. It was the kind of place where time slipped by without warning. Janessa sat at a corner table, books spread out neatly in front of her. Highlighter. Notes. Laptop. Everything organized. Everything controlled. “Am I late?” She looked up. Daniel stood there, slightly out of breath, holding two drinks. “You’re exactly three minutes late,” she said. He smiled, placing one of the drinks in front of her. “Then I’m right on time.” She shook her head, but a small smile slipped through anyway. “You didn’t have to get this.” “I know,” he said, sitting across from her. “I wanted to.” Janessa looked down at the drink for a second, then back at her notes. “Okay,” she said, trying to focus. “We actually need to study.” “Yes, ma’am.” At first, it was normal. They went over concepts, compared notes, tested each other on key points. Daniel wasn’t just nice, he was smart. Quick. Focused when he needed to be. “Wait,” he said at one point, leaning closer to her notebook. “You wrote this formula wrong.” Janessa frowned. “No, I didn’t.” He pointed. “Right there.” She leaned in too. Their shoulders brushed. Neither of them moved away immediately. Janessa fixed the mistake, clearing her throat slightly. “Okay… maybe I did.” “Maybe?” he teased. She rolled her eyes. “Focus.” Time passed. More than either of them realized. The table slowly filled with empty cups and scattered notes, but the tension between them… shifted. It wasn’t just studying anymore. It was the small things. The way Daniel watched her when she was concentrating. The way Janessa laughed more easily than she had in days. The way silence between them didn’t feel awkward. It felt… comfortable. “Take a break,” Daniel said after a while. “I’m fine.” “You’ve read the same paragraph three times.” Janessa paused. “Okay… maybe I need a break.” He leaned back in his chair. “See? I’m helpful.” She smiled, resting her chin lightly on her hand. “Don’t get used to it.” Daniel looked at her for a second longer than usual. Not joking this time. Not teasing. Just… looking. Janessa felt it. That shift. That moment where something unspoken filled the space between them. “You’re different when you’re not stressed,” he said quietly. She blinked. “What does that mean?” “You let your guard down,” he replied. “A little.” Janessa didn’t respond immediately. Because he wasn’t wrong. “And is that a good thing?” she asked. Daniel leaned forward slightly. “I think it is.” The air changed. Subtle. But undeniable. Janessa’s heart picked up, just a little. Daniel’s gaze dropped briefly to her lips, then back to her eyes. Neither of them moved. But neither of them looked away either. “Daniel......” she started softly. He didn’t answer. He just leaned in slowly, like he was giving her time to stop him. She didn’t. Not at first. Her breath caught. Her eyes flickered to his lips. Closer. Closer..... A chair scraped loudly nearby. The sound snapped everything. Janessa pulled back immediately, sitting up straighter. Daniel leaned back too, running a hand through his hair. “Right,” he said quietly. “Library.” Janessa let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Yeah… library.” Silence. Different now. Heavier. After a moment, she looked down at her notes again. “We should… keep studying,” she said. “Yeah,” Daniel replied. But neither of them moved right away. Because something had shifted. And they both felt it. Across the library, unnoticed someone else had just walked in. Enzo. He stopped. His eyes landed on them instantly. Too close. Too comfortable. Too familiar. And the way they pulled apart just slightly, like something had almost happened. Enzo’s expression darkened. He didn’t walk over. He didn’t say anything. He just stood there for a second, watching. Then turned and walked out. Back at the table, Janessa tried to focus again. But her thoughts weren’t on the exam anymore. And Daniel, sat across from her, quiet, calculating. Because to him, that moment Wasn’t almost. It was progress.
