The cold metal of the infirmary door pressed against Aria’s palm as she fought to steady her breath. The faint scent of antiseptic mixed with the sharp tang of blood filled the cramped room, mingling with the pounding of her heart.
Kai lay pale and weak on the cot, his breathing shallow but steady. She gripped his hand tightly, willing him to hold on. His face was drawn, shadowed with pain, yet in his eyes lingered a spark, the stubborn fire that had never truly died.
Outside, the heavy footsteps of approaching warriors echoed down the stone corridor. The pack was no longer the haven it had once been. Ever since Kai’s return, everything felt like it was unraveling.
Lucien stood nearby, his broad shoulders squared and his expression unreadable. The tension in the room thickened as he turned to Aria, voice low but steady.
“They’re coming for him.”
Aria’s throat tightened. “They want to kill him.”
Lucien’s jaw clenched. “If they do, they’re declaring war on this pack.”
The door creaked open with a harsh scrape, and three figures stepped inside. Their eyes gleamed unnaturally in the dim light, cold and merciless.
The leader, a tall warrior with a scar slicing down one cheek, spoke with chilling authority.
“By order of Elder Mathias, this rogue is to be executed immediately.”
Aria shot to her feet, planting herself firmly between Kai and the intruders.
“He’s not a rogue! He’s my brother!”
The warriors paused, uncertainty flickering across their faces.
Kai’s breathing faltered, but he managed to whisper, “Aria… trust no one.”
Lucien moved like a shadow, drawing his blade and positioning himself defensively in front of Aria.
“I don’t care what orders you have. You will not harm him while I stand.”
The leader’s lips curled into a cruel sneer. “You choose your side, Alpha. Against the council.”
Before she could blink, the air exploded into violence. The warriors lunged with lethal speed, claws flashing and weapons drawn.
Steel rang against steel as Lucien parried the leader’s strike. The other two charged toward the bed, intent on Kai and Aria.
Her wolf stirred violently beneath her skin. The power that had begun to awaken inside her churned like a storm, demanding release.
“Get away from him!” Aria shouted, her voice thick with desperation.
Without thinking, a burst of energy surged through her, a raw force unleashed from deep within her chest. One warrior was sent crashing into the wall, his body crumpling like a ragdoll. Another stumbled backward, dazed and disoriented.
Lucien’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What was that?”
“I don’t know,” she gasped, trembling. “But it’s waking up.”
The leader, recovering quickly, renewed his assault on Lucien. But Lucien was relentless. With a swift blow, he struck the warrior down, sending him sprawling unconscious to the floor.
The remaining warriors exchanged a glance, fear flickering in their eyes. Without another word, they fled into the shadows beyond the door.
Lucien moved to lock the heavy door behind them, his breath heavy but controlled.
“If they come back,” he said darkly, “they’ll have to go through me.”
Aria sank back beside Kai, brushing the damp strands of hair from his pale forehead. Tears threatened once again, but she fought them back.
“He’s my brother,” she whispered fiercely, “he bled for this pack once and now, he’s bleeding again because someone inside betrayed him.”
Kai’s eyelids fluttered, his voice weak but urgent.
“Aria… the Crescent Pact… they’re closer than you think… and Selene… she’s not who she seems…”
The room fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the ragged breaths of the wounded.
Aria’s mind raced, the weight of betrayal settling like ice in her veins. The pack she had trusted, the friend she had believed in everything was shifting beneath her feet.
Lucien’s voice broke through her spiraling thoughts.
“We need to warn the others. If Selene is involved… this isn’t just about Kai. It’s about the whole pack.”
Aria nodded, rising with renewed determination despite the weariness that clawed at her bones.
As they prepared to leave, Kai’s hand tightened around hers.
“Promise me,” he said, “you’ll be careful. The Crescent Pact… they won’t stop until they have what they want.”
Aria’s eyes burned with fierce resolve.
“I promise.”
Outside the infirmary, shadows moved silently, watching and waiting.
The war had begun.
we never heard of them.”
“They were wiped out centuries ago,” Aria said. “Feared for their ability to manipulate minds. They didn’t fight with claws, they fought with lies.”
Lucien’s expression hardened. “She was planted here. To get close to me. To control the pack.”
A crash echoed above them. Then a frantic voice:
“Alpha! The prisoner’s gone!”
They ran.
Infirmary
The room was torn apart. Cabinets overturned. Blood smeared on the walls.
Kai was gone.
One of the warriors pointed to the far wall. A word had been clawed into the stone.
RUN
Aria’s heart pounded. “This wasn’t Kai’s doing. This was staged.”
Lucien growled. “There was no breach. Which means…”
“She was here,” Aria whispered. “Selene took him.”
A gust of wind slammed the window open, scattering papers. A single torn parchment landed at Aria’s feet. She bent down and picked it up.
It was a piece of the scroll. Selene’s name was circled in red. Underneath it, a strange symbol burned into the parchment.
The moment her fingers touched it, a jolt shot through her chest.
Her eyes rolled back.
Lucien caught her as she collapsed, shouting her name.
Her body trembled violently. Her mouth opened, and her voice was no longer her own.
“She walks in the light but lives in the shadow,” Aria said, her eyes glowing silver. “She holds the blade meant for the Luna’s heart.”
Lucien’s breath caught. “Aria Aria, wake up.”
But she wasn’t done.
“She’s coming,” Aria whispered, her body still trembling. “Selene’s already here.”
Then her body went still.
