Blade raised— Aimed straight for the prince’s back. Evelyn ran. Her lungs burned. Her legs pushed harder. Faster. Too far. Too slow— No. Not slow. She jumped. Time fractured. The world narrowed to one moment. One strike. One choice. She landed between them— Steel crashed against steel. The impact shot through her arm— Pain exploded— But she held The assassin’s eyes widened. He hadn’t expected resistance. Evelyn twisted. Redirected his blade. Drove her knee into his ribs. He staggered. Lost balance— She took advantage instantly. Grabbed his weapon. Turned it— And drove it straight into his chest. The sound— A dull, final impact. He froze. Eyes wide. Then— Collapsed. Silence followed. Heavy. Unreal. Evelyn stood there— Breathing hard. Blood on her hands. On her clothes. On the ground beneath her. Alive. Because of her. “Who… are you?” His voice. Low. Controlled Behind her. Close. Evelyn turned slowly. Met his gaze. And for a moment— Everything else disappeared.
