The Girl Who Changed History

206 Words
The battlefield settled. But Evelyn didn’t relax. Couldn’t. Something was wrong. She felt it. That same instinct. The one that had kept her alive more times than she could count. Danger. Still here. Her eyes scanned the trees. The shadows. The edges of movement others would miss. And then— She saw it A flicker. Metal. A dart— Already in motion. Flying straight toward the prince. Too fast. Too close. No time to think. Evelyn moved. Stepped in front of him— Hand snapping up— Caught it mid-air. The entire clearing froze. Even the guards. Even the prince. Evelyn stared at the dart. Analyzing instantly. The coating. The smell. The viscosity. Her expression hardened. “Poison.” Her voice was calm. Too calm. She looked up. Eyes scanning the darkness again. “Whoever sent them…” Her grip tightened around the dart. “…isn’t done.” Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. The prince stepped closer. Not cautious. Not hesitant. Intent. Focused. He studied her. Not like a stranger. Not like a savior. Like a problem. A mystery. Something dangerous. “Then you’ll stay.” Not a request. Not a suggestion. A decision. Evelyn’s breath caught. Because deep down— She already knew. She wasn’t going anywhere.
