She moved a bit closer. At the very top of the tree was a lone branch, and there a man hung from a noose. A metal pole stuck out from the ground which held the black rope, also covered in red sap. She heard the cracking of the man’s neck as he gently swung in the breeze. “This must be the man that Nova was talking about,” Amethyst whispered to herself. A wall of fog encircled the tree. Amethyst walked back over to the hanged man. “Hello there.” She spoke softly. “Someone told me you would be able to help me find my way to the woman that lives on the mountain.” No sound came from the man’s mouth, but he jerked when he heard her voice. “Are you able to talk or—” The man’s head twitched, and his body violently convulsed. His cracking bones echoed as the man walked around in mid-air. Amet
