David's POV
It was the full moon and the group of girls that would be definitely eliminated were already in my residence. I wanted to go into the woods and feel the scent and presence of my mate again. I couldn't do that as this was what I agreed to.
I stood aloof, watching the girls as they played around the compound. I could see the joy and hopes on some of the girls' faces and that made me more angry. None of them really wanted or cared about me. They just wanted to be Luna.
A thought struck my mind again. The last time I met my mate, she was running away from me.
Was she afraid? Or didn't she want to be Luna like all these gold diggers that had flooded my residence now?
If that's what she wanted, I was ready to step down from this Alpha position to be with her.
'But how am I going to find her again if she keeps running away from me?'
I needed to devise a plan. As I was busy with my thoughts, the cackles from the girls' group were disturbing me greatly. I was already tired of their presence.
I yelled on top of my voice, "Evander!!"
My voice was so loud that it was followed by an utmost silence. Some of the girls were already looking at me with fear in their eyes. Most of them were already anticipating that something was going to happen as I had obviously lost my cool again.
I looked around, expecting to see Evander but he was nowhere to be found.
'Why has he not shown up? Everyone in this residence surely heard me.'
As I was about to open my mouth wide again, I couldn't as a strange scent hit my nose. It was a scent coming from a female wolf but it wasn't like the nice one in the woods.
"You have put everyone on edge. That is not really necessary."
Evander's calm voice related directly into my ear. I was sure that he was also on edge like he said. It was his voice that brought me back from the disturbing scent.
I turned to face Evander, I smiled to ease the tension that had built up.
I asked jokingly, "Are you on edge too?"
Instead of getting a response from Evander, I just noticed that he was looking at me inquisitively. I didn't want to fall for his trick to hide his recent fear.
I held his shoulders when I couldn't take it any longer. "Stop looking at me as if you want to peel off my skin."
Evander still kept staring at me. My words had no effect on him.
He finally opened his mouth. "You were sniffing, are you getting her scent again?"
Not until Evander asked this question, I didn't know that I was busy inhaling the strange scent.
I quickly shook my head. It was something I wouldn't want anyone to know about. "Don't mind me, it was nothing. I was just trying to see if I could get that sweet scent again."
Evander was silent, but there were notes of pity that were clearly written on his face.
It seemed like he was fighting back tears as he asked. "Are you tired of being the Alpha? I keep doing my best to make sure you are not alone..."
I quickly interrupted before he would burst into tears. "I'm not tired of being an Alpha. Please, don't misunderstand me."
I felt bad just thinking that one of the people I trusted and confided in was doubting me. I was ready to prove to him that it was not as he thought.
I felt like I should just tell him the truth. "Yes, it's true that I'm getting a scent but it's not her."
Evander was breathing heavily, all in the attempt to avoid tearing up. He felt betrayed. "Who's her? You are getting a mating scent and you can only get that from your destined mate," he asserted.
My voice had started shaking as I was trying to convince him. "The mating scent in the woods was different. This one is strange."
Evander finally managed to smile. "You are the Alpha. I am your beta. I have to abide with whatever you say. I just want you to tell me the truth. Why didn't you want to get mated?"
I became heartbroken. I didn't know what else to say to him. "Evander, listen to me. My mate is not here." I pronounced it rigidly.
Evander bowed slightly. "Do you want me to dismiss them, sir?" he asked politely. His voice showed he had distant himself from being my friend. Now, he was acting just like an ordinary beta to me.
For the sake of friendship, I pulled him closer and hugged him. He couldn't resist.
I patted the back of his head and asked. "What do you want me to do? I don't want a wrong mate."
Evander became relaxed. He smiles broadly and I noticed that he was back to the Evander that was always by my side.
He patted my shoulder, nodding his head, urging me to stop talking. "Are you my Alpha now or my friend?"
I smiled after realising what he was driving at. "I will always be both!"
Evander turned away immediately. "Then, I will send them away, sir."
I rushed after him and held him. "I'm your friend, Alpha Evander!"
He let out a sigh of relief and turned back to me. "This is what we are going to do. I will assemble the girls now and you will do what you agreed to do." He left immediately and before long, I realised that the group of girls were gathered in front of me.
"Alpha David!!! You look handsome tonight!"
"Alpha David, I can't wait anymore"
"I have always dreamed that I'm the future Luna."
The girls kept saying but their words were sheer nuisance to my ears as I was sure that none of them was the girl from the woods.
Evander's voice came up again. "We are starting, one after the other!" He touched one of the girls, telling her to come to me. "You!"
This was crazy, they would be coming to my side why I sniffed them. Literal elimination.
Evander, the director of the program, announced again, "Once you are dismissed, don't waste time please!"
It kept going on and on for minutes. Suddenly, the strange scent filled the air again.
I didn't even know how but Evander also knew that I was getting a scent from the girl standing beside me. He dismissed the others immediately while they walked away chatting angrily.
I felt sad looking at the girl in front of me.
'Does this mean I won't see that girl in the woods ever again?'
Evander walked towards us and it seemed like he noticed something strange. "You look familiar. Have we met before?"
I quickly gazed at the girl's face and realised that Evander was right.
I frowned at her and asked angrily, "Are you not Oswald's daughter?"
The girl nodded, she was obviously afraid and I couldn't stop thinking that something was fishy. Oswald was cunning, but how did he do this?
Rhaynes, Oswald's daughter summoned some inner courage, she tightened her face and protested, "Why are you doing this? I'm your mate and you keep sending me away."
Evander was quicker to reply, "I remembered you came to the Alpha's residence claiming that you are the future Luna. And he sent you away."
Rhaynes snapped again. "Just ask your Alpha why he keeps avoiding me when the goddess had destined us to be together?"
Evander moved closer to me and asked quietly, "Are you still getting the strange scent?"
I nodded.
Evander moved around Rhaynes. "I think I know what's happening, Alpha. My grandfather told me about it. Rhaynes and her father have just made a big mistake.”
