Elodie’s Pov
It had been two weeks since I moved into Alpha Lewis' home. And every single day had been a nightmare.
At meals, he spoke to me with disgust, even in front of the maids and servants. I was nothing but an outcast in this house. He called me names, made me feel worthless, and yet I couldn't do anything. He was the Alpha. And I? I had no power, no voice, no wolf. I had already accepted my fate.
Today was the ceremony. The day that would change my life forever, the day I will become his wife and be more miserable.
The maids dressed me in an elegant gown, their hands working quickly as they whispered behind my back. I could hear them, I knew the things they said when they thought I wasn’t listening. And now, here they were, pretending to serve me with grace. But I remained silent. What could I even say?
I looked at myself in the mirror. My hair was perfectly done. My dress hugged me in all the right places. I looked beautiful. But inside? Inside, I was drowning.
As I stepped out of my room, I met Alpha Lewis’ mother. She wasn’t like her son. She wasn’t cruel. She didn’t go out of her way to make me feel miserable. But she never questioned him either.
“You look beautiful,” she said with a soft smile. “I can't wait for you to come down and everyone will see how beautiful you look.”
I forced a smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes.
She noticed how fake my smile was, she gave me an assurance that I didn't need “Don’t be sad,” she said, reading my expression. “I will talk to him. He will change towards you, he's not a bad person, trust me.”
Trust? There was nothing to trust. But I nodded anyway.
She sent me to call Alpha Lewis because we needed to go out together. Just as I reached his room, I heard moans, sweet moans. My heart stopped, it felt like something was breaking inside me.
A voice I knew too well. My sister.
Then his voice followed. “You are so sweet, my love, I'll always love you.”
The world crashed around me. My body froze, but my heart pounded. My vision blurred as the weight of betrayal settled in my chest.
A tear slipped down my cheek, ruining the powder on my face. But I didn’t care. I turned and ran, my heels clicking against the floor as I fled.
I ran past Alpha Lewis’ mother. She called out to me, concern in her voice, but I ignored her. The ceremony was already prepared outside. I needed to get away from here. From them.
I decided to go out and wait for him. The moment I stepped outside, the cold night air hit my skin, but it did nothing to stop the burning rage and humiliation coursing through my veins.
My heart pounded, my hands trembled, and my lips quivered as I tried to steady my breathing. People were gathered, talking in hushed voices, excitement buzzing in the air, yet I felt completely alone.
A few minutes passed before Lewis finally walked outside, his face as composed as ever, as if nothing had just happened. As if he hadn’t just been inside, tangled up with my sister, breaking what little was left of me.
My nails dug into my palms as I clenched my fists. How could he walk out here so calmly, pretending he had done nothing wrong? How could he stand there, not even sparing me a glance, as if I was completely invisible?
I swallowed the pain and stood beside him as the ceremony began. The Moon Goddess arrived, ready to seal our bond. My father sat among the guests, smiling at me. I refused to smile back. Why should I?
The Moon Goddess muttered her incantations, bringing our hands together. I barely breathed as she continued.
Then, suddenly, Lewis gasped.
His body went stiff. His eyes rolled back. And then, he collapsed to the ground, convulsing.
The moment Lewis collapsed, the entire gathering erupted into chaos. Gasps filled the air, followed by panicked whispers.
“What is happening?” My voice came out hoarse, barely above a whisper.
Juliette’s frantic voice pierced through the panic. “What is happening? Someone help him!”
My heart raced as the moon Goddess worked to stabilize him, her powers radiating in the dim light. The convulsions slowly came to a halt, and after what felt like an eternity, Lewis lay still, his breathing shallow but steady. The tension in the air was suffocating. I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding, my body trembling from the sheer terror of the moment.
Then, just as the whispers in the crowd started to fade, Lewis lifted his head slightly and turned to look at me. His dark eyes burned with something unreadable, something dangerous. The next words that left his lips shattered everything.
“Elodie gave me something to drink before I came outside. I think she poisoned me.”
My breath hitched. “What?”
The entire district fell silent, every pair of eyes turning toward me. I shook my head, stepping back. “No. No, I didn’t.”
Lewis forced himself up, his glare searing through me. “Are you calling me a liar?”
Elena’s voice rang out, sharp and full of venom. “You evil child! You’ve brought your bad luck into the Alpha’s home. How could you?”
Tears welled in my eyes as I turned to my father. “Please, Father, you have to believe me. I would never do such a thing.”
Two maids stepped forward at Lewis’s signal. “Did you see Elodie bring anything into my chambers?” he asked them.
They exchanged glances before nodding. “Yes, Alpha. We saw her walk inside with a glass of juice.”
The weight of their words crushed my chest. “That’s a lie!” My voice cracked. “I didn’t! I heard you guys in the room!”
Juliette, my sister, scoffed. “Oh, please, Elodie. First, you try to kill the Alpha, and now you’re accusing me of what? Being with him?” She laughed, her mockery slicing through my soul. “Did anyone see me in the mansion? No? Then stop trying to frame me for your crimes.”
“Shut up, you b***h!” Amelia, my friend, stepped forward, glaring at Juliette. “You’re the one who did it, not Elodie!”
Juliette scoffed. “You dare accuse me?”
Lewis’s eyes darkened. “Amelia, leave. Now.”
Amelia turned to me, her eyes pleading. “Elodie…”
“Go,” I whispered. “Please.”
She hesitated, then obeyed.
Lewis’s eyes burned with fury. “I can’t believe you would stoop this low.”
The Moon Goddess, her voice dripping with disappointment, declared, “You tried to kill your mate, your Alpha. There are consequences for such treachery.”
My hands trembled. “I swear on my life, I did nothing.”
Lewis ignored my pleas. “No one is going to help you. You will suffer for what you did.” His voice turned cold. “Everyone, leave. The council will convene tomorrow to decide her fate.”
His final words sent an icy chill down my spine.
Death or banishment.
Either way, my life was over.
