For several long moments...
No one inside the helicopter spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was reverent.
Even Carson, who usually filled every quiet moment with some remark or joke, remained completely silent as the helicopter continued its slow descent toward the hidden kingdom.
Princess Selena couldn't tear her eyes away from the window. Every second revealed something new. The kingdom wasn't merely enormous. It was endless.
What she had first mistaken for one city was actually dozens. Ancient settlements spread across valleys, climbed mountainsides and disappeared into forests that looked untouched by time itself. Stone roads shimmered beneath the sunlight like polished silver. Massive bridges arched between cliffs that should never have been connected. Elegant towers rose from the mountains themselves, carved directly into the living rock with such precision that they almost appeared to have grown naturally from the stone. Nothing felt forced. Nothing felt built. Everything looked...
Alive.
Prince Dominic finally found his voice. "...How many people live here?"
King Theron continued watching the kingdom below. "More than most kingdoms believe exist."
Prince Dominic blinked. "That's not a number."
"It isn't."
Carson grinned. "You'll discover His Majesty answers questions exactly like ancient prophecies."
King Theron's lips twitched.
"I've noticed." Princess Selena smiled faintly.
Prince Dominic sighed dramatically. "So this entire kingdom survives entirely on mysterious answers."
Carson nodded. "Mostly."
Soren folded his arms. "And paperwork."
Carson groaned. "Don't remind me."
Princess Selena looked between them. "You have paperwork?"
Carson looked horrified. "So much paperwork."
Soren nodded seriously. "The kingdom has existed for over three thousand years."
Carson pointed dramatically. "Do you know how many forms that creates?"
Prince Dominic actually laughed. "I wasn't expecting bureaucracy."
King Theron answered without looking away from the window. "No kingdom escapes bureaucracy."
That earned several chuckles throughout the helicopter.
The laughter helped. Only briefly.
Because Princess Selena noticed something. King Theron wasn't smiling anymore. He had gone quiet again. Far too quiet.
She watched him carefully. His eyes weren't studying the kingdom. They were searching it. Almost...
Counting.
"What are you looking for?" The question escaped before she realized she'd spoken.
The helicopter became quieter again.
King Theron didn't answer immediately. His gaze continued moving slowly across the mountains. Across the forests. Across the floating islands. Across the endless silver Veil surrounding everything. Finally...
"I don't know."
Princess Selena frowned. "You're searching for something you don't know?"
"Yes."
That answer somehow made her even more uneasy.
King Theron slowly leaned forward, resting one hand against the window. "When a king has ruled as long as I have..." His voice had become distant. "...you learn to notice when your kingdom feels different."
Princess Selena glanced back outside. "It feels different?"
King Theron nodded once. "Very."
Prince Dominic studied the landscape again. "It looks peaceful."
"It is." Another pause. "But peace and safety are not the same thing."
Nobody argued. Nobody could.
Princess Selena remembered Ironblood only yesterday. It had looked peaceful too. Before the circles. Before the crystal. Before everything changed.
King Theron exhaled quietly. "The Veil has never welcomed someone." His words hung heavily in the cabin. "Not once."
Princess Selena looked toward the dancing silver lights still following them."They're still here."
"Yes."
"They haven't left."
"No." King Theron's expression darkened. "They should have."
The tiny lights continued circling the helicopter in graceful spirals. Not dozens anymore. Hundreds.
Princess Selena hadn't even noticed when their numbers had grown. They filled the air around the aircraft like living starlight. Beautiful. Silent. Watching.
Prince Dominic frowned. "They're multiplying."
Carson leaned toward the window. "...They're definitely multiplying."
Even Soren looked unsettled now. "I've never seen this."
Neither had the pilot.
Princess Selena noticed him glancing repeatedly at the mirrors instead of watching the skies. He wasn't looking for danger. He was watching the lights.
King Theron slowly closed his eyes.
Princess Selena recognized that expression immediately.
He was listening again. Not with his ears. With something older. Something only an ancient Lycan possessed. Several seconds passed. Then...
His eyes opened suddenly. "What?"
Luna's Peak.
Everyone looked at him.
Carson blinked. "What about it?"
King Theron stood so abruptly that everyone looked at him.
The helicopter shifted slightly beneath the sudden movement.
"The lights." He pointed outside. "They aren't following us."
Princess Selena frowned. "They're not?"
King Theron slowly shook his head. "They're leading us."
Silence.
Prince Dominic looked outside again.
The hundreds of silver lights had changed direction. Instead of surrounding the helicopter...
They were flying ahead. Flowing toward one of the highest mountains in the kingdom.
Princess Selena followed them with her eyes.
The mountain dwarfed every other peak around it. Its summit disappeared beyond the clouds. Halfway up its side stood an enormous palace unlike anything she had ever imagined. Not merely a castle. A city. Built from brilliant white stone that shimmered faintly beneath the sunlight. Thousands of towers rose toward the heavens. Crystal domes reflected the sky. Waterfalls poured directly through the palace itself before disappearing into the valley below.
The silver lights were heading straight toward it.
King Theron's breathing slowed. "...No."
Carson looked at him. "What?"
The ancient king whispered so quietly that only those nearest heard him. "They're taking her there."
Princess Selena looked at him. "Taking me where?"
King Theron slowly lifted one trembling hand toward the palace. "The Moon Citadel."
Even Carson stopped smiling.
Soren's expression became serious.
Prince Dominic looked between them. "What's the Moon Citadel?"
Nobody answered immediately. Finally...
King Theron spoke. "It is the oldest place in our kingdom."
Princess Selena continued staring at the breathtaking palace. "It was built by the first Lycans?"
King Theron slowly shook his head. "No."
The helicopter became silent once more.
Princess Selena looked back at him. "Then who built it?"
King Theron's silver eyes met hers. For just a heartbeat...
She saw something she had never seen in them before.
Uncertainty.
"I don't know."
That answer unsettled everyone. Because there were very few things King Theron did not know.
"The oldest records simply say..." His voice had become almost reverent. "...that when the first Lycans found this valley..." He looked back toward the impossible palace. "...the Moon Citadel was already waiting."
Princess Selena felt a shiver run through her entire body. Already waiting. Not built. Not discovered. Waiting. Outside...
The silver lights suddenly accelerated. Hundreds of tiny stars raced toward the ancient palace like messengers carrying news home.
King Theron watched them disappear into the gleaming towers. His face had become pale once more.
His whisper was so soft that Princess Selena almost missed it. "...Please let me be wrong."
Prince Dominic looked at him immediately. "Wrong about what?"
King Theron never answered. Instead...
Far below...
Every bell within the Moon Citadel began to ring. Not one. Not ten. Hundreds.
Their ancient voices echoed across the hidden kingdom, rolling through the mountains like a summons that had not been heard...
For thousands of years. The ancient bells continued to ring. Deep. Powerful. Each toll rolled across the mountains like thunder, echoing from peak to peak before disappearing into the endless forests below.
The sound was unlike any bell Princess Selena had ever heard. It wasn't merely heard. It was felt. Every note seemed to vibrate through the helicopter itself, sending faint tremors through the floor beneath their feet.
No one spoke.
Even the pilots had become unnaturally still.
The lead pilot glanced across the instrument panel before looking at his co-pilot. "You seeing this?"
The co-pilot frowned at the navigation display. "...Everything's gone."
"What?"
"The instruments."
Princess Selena turned sharply. "What do you mean, gone?"
The co-pilot swallowed. "Our compass isn't responding."
The pilot checked another display. "Altitude is fluctuating."
"But we're flying level."
"The GPS has disappeared."
Carson leaned forward. "It always loses signal in the Veil."
The co-pilot slowly shook his head. "No..." His voice had become quieter. "This is different."
The pilot tapped the screen twice. Then three times. Nothing. Every display had faded to black except the basic flight controls.
"It's as though..." He hesitated. "...the Kingdom doesn't want us using them."
Silence settled over the cabin.
Princess Selena instinctively looked toward King Theron.
He had gone deathly pale. His eyes never left the Moon Citadel.
"Your Majesty..." Soren's normally steady voice held the slightest trace of concern.
King Theron didn't answer. He simply stared. Far below...
The Moon Citadel rose from the mountainside like something crafted from moonlight itself.
The closer they flew, the less it resembled a palace. It became something else entirely. Something older.
The white stone wasn't truly white. It shimmered with soft shades of silver, pearl and pale blue, changing gently whenever the sunlight touched it. No two walls reflected the light in quite the same way.
It almost appeared to breathe.
Princess Selena found herself blinking several times. "...Is it moving?"
Prince Dominic narrowed his eyes. "I thought I imagined that."
Neither of them had.
The enormous towers seemed impossibly still. Yet every now and then...
The light flowing across them shifted as though the Citadel itself possessed a heartbeat.
Carson quietly muttered, "I've never noticed that before."
"You haven't." Soren replied. "I have."
Carson looked at him. "You've seen this?"
Soren nodded slowly. "Only once."
"When?"
"When I was a child."
That caught everyone's attention.
"My father brought me here for the Festival of the First Moon." His silver eyes remained fixed upon the Citadel. "It looked..." He struggled for the word. "...alive."
Princess Selena whispered, "It still does."
King Theron finally spoke. "It has always been alive."
Every head turned toward him.
Prince Dominic frowned. "What do you mean?"
The ancient king answered without looking away. "The Moon Citadel has never been merely stone."
Princess Selena looked back toward the magnificent structure. Its countless towers stretched into the clouds, disappearing into silver mist before emerging again higher above. Bridges of crystal connected enormous terraces overflowing with glowing flowers. Water cascaded from the rooftops, flowing through sculpted channels before plunging over the mountainside in shimmering waterfalls that sparkled with tiny points of light. Massive statues stood along every terrace. Not warriors. Not kings. Figures cloaked in flowing robes, their faces turned toward the heavens. Each held a crystal sphere cradled within their hands.
Princess Selena frowned. "They aren't Lycans."
King Theron's breathing seemed to stop. "No."
"Who are they?"
"I don't know."
His answer sent another chill through the cabin. "There are no records?"
"None."
Prince Dominic looked at the towering statues. "They must have been important."
"They were." King Theron answered immediately. "But no one remembers why."
The words lingered heavily in the air. Thousands of years. Entire generations. Yet no one knew who had built the oldest place in the Lycan Kingdom.
Princess Selena felt impossibly small.
The helicopter banked gently to the left.
The pilot frowned. "I didn't do that."
His hands tightened around the controls. The helicopter continued turning. Slowly. Deliberately. Toward the Moon Citadel. The pilot pulled lightly on the controls. Nothing happened.
His heartbeat visibly quickened. "Control isn't responding."
The co-pilot immediately reached for the emergency override. Still nothing. "We're not turning."
The pilot swallowed hard. "...We're being turned."
A murmur rippled through every Lycan aboard.
Carson's easy smile disappeared completely. "That's... never happened."
Soren immediately unclipped his harness. "Do you need assistance?"
The pilot shook his head. "I don't even know what assistance would help." He looked over his shoulder at King Theron. "Your Majesty..." His voice carried uncertainty that Princess Selena had never expected to hear from a seasoned Lycan pilot. "...do you want us to pull away?"
Every eye fell upon the ancient king. The bells continued to ring outside. Slow. Steady. Calling. Calling. Calling.
King Theron's jaw tightened. For several long seconds...
He said nothing.
Princess Selena watched him carefully. She had seen him stand before hostile Alphas without flinching. She had watched him confront ancient magic with calm determination. She had never...
Not once...
Seen fear in his eyes. Until now.
Very quietly, almost to himself, he murmured, "This wasn't supposed to happen."
Princess Selena leaned forward. "What wasn't?"
King Theron closed his eyes briefly. "The Citadel. It has never called anyone."
Prince Dominic frowned. "You said the Veil welcomed Selena."
"It did." King Theron's voice was strained. "But the Citadel..." He slowly looked toward the towering palace. "...has remained silent for thousands of years."
The pilot's voice cut through the silence. "Your Majesty..." King Theron looked up. "We're descending. I haven't started our landing approach."
Princess Selena looked out the window. The helicopter was indeed losing altitude. Not rapidly. Gracefully. Almost...
As though invisible hands were lowering it from the sky.
The other helicopters had begun descending too. Perfectly synchronized. Without a single radio command.
The lead pilot reached for his headset. "I can't contact the others."
Static. Nothing but static.
The co-pilot tried another frequency. Then another. Silence. "They're gone."
"No." King Theron said quietly. "They're listening."
Everyone stared at him.
"Listening to what?" Princess Selena asked.
The ancient king's gaze remained fixed on the gleaming palace ahead.
"I fear..." His voice barely rose above a whisper. "...to someone who has been waiting far longer than any of us can comprehend."
Outside, the bells suddenly stopped. The silence that followed was somehow even more terrifying. Not a bird sang. Not a breeze stirred the silver trees. Even the waterfalls seemed muted beneath an invisible hush. It was as though the entire hidden kingdom had paused...
Holding its breath...
Waiting to see what the Moon Citadel would do next.
