Chike's pov
A knock at the door to my home office interrupted my thoughts. "Come in," I called, and Akin entered, holding an envelope. "Sir, as instructed, everything relating to Miss Ada," he said, handing the envelope to me.
I waved him off, and Akin left the room, leaving me alone with the envelope. I sat back in my chair and opened it, revealing the contents. Adaobi NWACHUCKWU, 25 years old, a single mother to a 6-year-old boy, a graduate of Imo State University, and she had never been married. My brow furrowed as I absorbed this information. What kind of life had she been living? She got pregnant at 19? It was not my place to judge, but for some reason, I felt an unexpected surge of emotion.
Why was I so bothered by this revelation? I couldn't quite understand the intensity of my reaction. I needed a cigarette to calm my nerves.
I closed the file without reading it in its entirety. I had seen enough for one day. But as I leaned back in my chair, I was overwhelmed by an unexplainable urge to see her. First, she had lied about not recognizing me, and now, I had a burning curiosity to understand this woman.
I reopened the file and copied her address from my phone. I couldn't resist the temptation to find out if she would still deny knowing me.
