Someone had dragged in extra chairs, the coffee table was crowded with cups, and the whole living room smelled of chips, soda, and cheap cologne. I sat on the edge of the couch, nursing a drink I didn’t even want, my eyes betraying me every time they flicked toward Jaxon. He sat across the room, Ava practically draped over him like she owned him. Her laugh was too high, too eager, every word she spoke aimed at keeping his attention on her. Kendra sat beside me, sipping slowly, her jealousy written all over her face. Her eyes kept darting between Jaxon and Ava, narrowing whenever Ava leaned in too close. I knew that look.
