Chapter 4

"Boss, are you really going to let Raven get ruined by those guys?" After Nora had been settled, one of Damian's brothers couldn't help asking. After all, everyone knew. I could only be bullied by Damian. Anyone else who so much as touched a single hair on my head would suffer a horrific fate. Damian said nothing. He simply strode toward the surveillance room. On the screen, I was brandishing my knife without a shred of hesitation at the men trying to tear my clothes off. But outnumbered, I was quickly losing ground. Suddenly, a section of the fabric across my chest was ripped away. Eyeing the window nearby, I clenched my teeth and leaped out. "Raven!" Jude had just arrived after receiving my distress message. I lost consciousness amid the searing pain. In the surveillance room, watching the scene unfold, a slow smile curved across Damian's lips. "Go. Chop off every one of those men's hands. And send Raven to the hospital." It wasn't long before his subordinate came rushing back. "Damian, Raven has already been taken to the hospital by someone else!" When I woke in the hospital, Jude was sitting beside me, his eyes rimmed red. Five floors wasn't high enough to kill me. It only broke one of my legs. "Raven, tomorrow we'll leave. We can get your leg treated overseas." Tomorrow was Nora's birthday. Damian would be busy with her and wouldn't have time to watch me. I wiped the tears from Jude's face and slowly nodded. Goodbye, Damian. The next day, Jude and I took a private car to the airport. To make checking in easier, Jude left me in my wheelchair off to the side. But by the time he finished and rushed back, I had vanished. "Damian, what do you want?!" An hour earlier, an airport employee had handed me a glass of water. After drinking it, I fell asleep. When I woke and saw Damian sitting beside me, a wave of despair washed over me. Damian gently stroked my hair, his eyes filled with obsession. "Raven, haven't you always loved me? How could you sneak off and marry someone else behind my back? Didn't you tell me you'd stay with me forever? How could you break your promise?" Seeing the madness pooling in Damian's eyes, I could no longer suppress the emotions raging inside me. "Damian, are you insane?! You destroyed my entire family. How could I possibly love you?!" But it was as if Damian hadn't heard a word. He continued studying my marriage certificate with a meticulous gaze. "Raven, I don't care whether you love me or not. As long as I love you, that's enough." With that, Damian pulled out a lighter and set the marriage certificate ablaze. "Raven, I know you're just jealous, right? Don't worry. Once I secure the Bennett family's backing and become the wealthiest man in the capital, I will immediately cut ties with Nora! Then we can be together properly. Forget the past. Let's start over. Okay?" I couldn't take it anymore. I slapped Damian hard across the face. "Damian, what the hell is wrong with you?!" Damian smiled faintly and gripped my hand tight. "Go ahead and hit me if it makes you feel better. Raven, as long as you're happy, you can do anything. Nothing except leaving me. For the rest of your life, you'll stay right by my side." I looked at the man before me, so consumed by madness, and felt only exhaustion. "Raven, wait for me. Once I take everything from the Bennett family, I'll come back and propose to you, alright?" Damian pressed a kiss to my forehead, then arranged for bodyguards to surround the entire villa layer after layer. Then he left for Nora's birthday banquet. Beneath a canopy of fireworks, the two of them kissed passionately. Just as the crowd was showering them with blessings, Damian's assistant rushed to his side, his face pale with panic. "Sir, Raven... she set herself on fire! She's dead!"
