“Your heads will roll if something happens to her,” I ordered the trainees as I laid my mate down on the backseat. They replied with a mechanical nod, their faces pale, both shaken from whatever took place. I brushed her cheek lightly, breathing in her scent to calm my wolf.
Kai wanted to control. The vibrations from my chest had everyone awaiting my orders at a safe distance. My orders were simple, weren’t they? My mate was supposed to be safe. She was supposed to be escorted back to the pack’s borders instead of fighting a f*****g vampire. I had five highly skilled gammas to watch over her and this was what I rushed over to find - my mate fainting before my very eyes, blood smeared on her arm, and two gammas close to dying!
Her scent was tainted with werewolf blood, rotting meat, and my gammas’. What the -
I snarled as I caught Peter’s scent on her waist.
No. It wasn’t on purpose.
I had gammas guarding the pack borders in my absence. Right now, our priority was to get everyone home safely. I buried my nose on the crook of her neck and inhaled deeply, bottling up the building frustration inside of me.
“Wait for me,” I whispered as soon as the growling stopped, then left her side.
The twins had been hauled off to one of the cars, their wounds healing slower than they normally would. I was left with three gammas I wanted nowhere near me at the moment for their own sakes.
I closed my eyes and breathed deeply, taking in her lingering scent.
“Siel.”
His walls were up.
“Seven,” Kai growled, demanding for the other to connect. I counted three seconds before I heard a reply.
“Alpha,” my beta acknowledged.
“How many are on your tail?”
“There should be about fifteen of them, Alpha,” he replied. “We’re heading back to Raphael and the others as we speak.”
“Don’t keep me waiting.”
I cut off the link, uninterested in whatever he had to say next.
Haven’t I asked to be informed of all that took place here? A simple ‘Alpha, we’ve encountered rogues’ with no follow up might as well be the same as accepting their deaths. These idiots.
Raphael, Rose, and Peter had armed themselves to the teeth with guns loaded with silver infused bullets, and blades made of silver and laced with wolfsbane. Wind scattered the pile of ashes on the grasses - a fitting end. Somehow, it irked me that the rogues wouldn’t get to suffer the same quick death as the vampire. They were both our enemies, but one was still in a way, just like us. Having to kill them in more brutal ways and torture all the lucky survivors had me gritting my teeth. Rogues deserved neither pity nor compassion. However, vampires should be put down in a slow and agonizing procedure.
“Kai, get out of my head.”
These thoughts were too ominous. At this moment though, I couldn’t help but agree.
He bared his teeth at me. “I can’t feel my mate.”
“She’ll be fine,” I said a little too quickly as if it were something I wanted to believe in too.
“Kill them all then go to mate.”
I smiled as I turned my back on my gammas. Raphael and Peter were already on their way to the woods. “With pleasure.”
The stink of rogues permeated the air, alarming my wolf. I rolled my shoulders as I lowered myself into all fours, calling upon my wolf. My bones realigned themselves, my skin and hair thickened, and soon I was running towards the woods in my wolf form.
I stopped for a moment, turning to growl at Rose. She stood by the car with the trainees and my mate. She bowed deeply to show that she understood.
I pointed my nose in the air and sniffed the scents of my gammas. The two hid themselves well.
Kai growled. He was getting impatient from waiting for the gammas to appear, especially the beta. “Let me take control.”
“Do as you wish,” I sighed as we switched places. He took control of his own body as I delved into the back of his mind to watch the events unfold.
Seven, a dark brown wolf with scattered lines of black, skidded to my side. The gammas followed, until we’d formed a barrier of sorts between the rogues and the ones left by on the road.
Raphael and Peter took down the first rogues who appeared. They were shot right through their heads - an instant kill. Kai then howled. He led them forward and guided them. The gammas protected each other, attacking in pairs or threes to take down rogues. Reire and Penny handled themselves flawlessly, working with my gammas like they had always been part of the pack.
In the midst of the commotion, Kai spotted a rogue retreating further back. A growl sent the rogue running.
“Leave one alive,” I ordered them as Kai set chase. Looks like we found our other survivor.
The rogue was fast yet careful. He moved between the trees in an attempt to shake us off, but Kai was too pissed off to let this one go. As I studied the wolf, I noticed that his size was different from regular wolves. He was almost as big as Kai, just less muscular. There was no doubt - this was an alpha wolf gone rogue.
The realization further angered Kai. Even though he had lost his pack, had been reduced to a filthy rogue, where was his pride as one who used to hold the title of an Alpha? Bloodborne or blessed, he was an Alpha until his death! And yet here he was, working with our enemy!
Kai sped up, his growls growing more threateningly as he caught up to the rogue. He ran alongside him. Then he twisted his body to shove the rogue with his head. It helped to slow him down for a little, and Kai took the opportunity to bite into his side.
I’d never gotten used to the taste of metal in my mouth. Kai on the other hand, happily lapped up the blood. With the rogue staggering to his feet, Kai easily bulldozed him into the ground. Moments later, a victorious howl erupted from my gammas. The rogue began to shift back into his human form as Kai joined the mingled howling.
Afterward, he gave me back control and we shifted. It was only then did I notice that the rogue laid still.
I cursed as I turned him over. He plunged a knife to his heart.
